Kindergarten News

~This week we will be learning the letter Hh as in hat, hippo, and horse. As part of our study with the letter Hh we will have a “Hat Day” on Friday, October 2nd . Students are asked to wear a favorite hat, a funny hat, or even a homemade hat. You can be creative with this if you want! Students will be able to wear the hat all day—we do just ask that students do not share hats. Show and Tell will be with items that begin with the /h/ sound. Check your schedule and start hunting!

~Our theme for the week will be “APPLES”. We are asking that each student bring in an apple on Monday, September 28th. The apple can be any size, color, or kind. Each day of the week we will use the apples for sorting, graphing, and/or tasting! We started our study of apples by celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday (Sept. 26) on Friday. We have all kinds of apple activities planned. It should be a sweet week!

~In Math we will begin learning about patterns in Chapter 2. Try to find patterns around your home. Students should even try making patterns with colors, shapes, and objects. Some ideas include using buttons, Lego blocks, fruit loops, m&m’s, skittles, etc…

~We will continue with our Reading story Plaidypus Lost and begin the new story Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip With Kindergarten. Please review the high frequency sight words I, am, the, and little. Review letter recognition for the letters from Aa-Ss, and watch for the Family Times newsletter for our new story. We will be talking about People in Communities and will be learning to recognize the remaining letters of the alphabet and how to classify and categorize.

~We have been practicing writing our first names. Please watch your child as he/she is writing. Be sure to check if letters are beginning at the top, not the bottom and also guide him/her to use the lines when forming the letters. Thank you!

~October Scholastic book order forms were sent home in your child’s folder. (Please do not feel obligated to order—order forms are sent each month and are optional.) If interested, be sure to return your completed order forms and money by Friday, Oct. 9th.

~Hearing screenings will be held on Thursday, Oct. 1st for students in grades K-3.

Monday will be Day 2 on our special classes’ schedule.

(**Don’t forget sneakers for gym class!)
