Week of March 6-10, 2017

Kindergarten News
            In Reading we will read the story, Abuela, by author Arthur Dorros.  It will be the last of our “adventure” stories for Unit 4.  It will be a fiction story about a city adventure and the boys and girls will learn a few Spanish words.  We will work with short and long /e/ sounds and the letter Ee and practice the comprehension skill, setting.  Check out the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder.  Please practice high                                                              frequency word cards.
            For Math, we will continue with Topic 8; Understanding Subtraction.  Students will act out and solve subtraction word problems, will use the minus sign to represent take away situations when recording subtraction, will use the equal sign, subtract, and write the difference.  Review practice pages as they come home in the folder. 
            Newspaper in Education Week is a program sponsored by the Pottsville Republican & Herald to promote interest in the newspaper in our schools.  It will be starting on Monday, March 6th and continue through Friday, March 10th.  Check for Mrs. Potts’ ad in the CLASSIFIED section of the newspaper.  Ads can be sent to school during the week for treats.  The I’m a Reader forms, for those who participate, should be returned t the teacher by the following Tuesday (March 14) with a parent’s signature and initial for each day of the week.
            The monthly PTO meeting will be held on Monday, March 6th @ 6:30 in the NSE cafeteria.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.  **The PTO Gertrude Hawk Fundraiser orders were due Friday, March 3rd.  Anyone who did not yet turn in orders must do so ASAP. 
            Scholastic book orders for March are due on or by Tuesday, March 7th for anyone interested in ordering.  Orders can be given to the teacher or placed online at scholastic.com. 
            Our next monthly 2 Hour Data Delay day will be Wednesday, March 8th.  **Please note there will be no special classes on Wednesday, 3/8.
            Spring Pictures will be taken at NSE on Thursday, March 9th.  ALL Children will be photographed and pictures will be available for purchase in 7-10 days.  PSP provides the school with a donation for every portrait package.  **For best results do not wear green!!!  Students may dress up, but keep dress code in mind!!
            Kindergarten registration for the upcoming, 2017-2018 school year will be held the week of March 13- 17.  Registration is open to all residents of the NS School District.  Please pass along this information to anyone with children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall.  Appointments should be scheduled with the office.
            The PTO Spring Fling Chinese Auction will be held on April 8th and 9th.  Our class’ theme basket will be “A Night with the Family”. Donations are due to the teacher by Friday, March 31st.    If a family would rather not shop for a donation, monetary donations will be accepted and Mrs. Potts will shop for items for the basket.  There is no value set and you can be creative!!  You can refer to the note sent home previously with suggestions and ideas!!  Thank you in advance for your support!!
            Boys and girls enjoyed our celebration of Dr. Seuss this week.  Students from Bloomsburg University, Mrs. Selgrade’s 3rd grade class, Miss Hughes, and Mrs. Bernosky (retired Kindergarten teacher) visited to read stories and complete Dr. Seuss activities.  Be sure to ask your child about the stories and activities our guests shared with the class.  Hats Off to Dr. Seuss!! Monday (3/6/16) will be DAY 4--Gym on the special classes’ schedule.  **Boys and girls will need gym attire and sneakers on Monday, March 6th and Library books for exchange on Friday, March 10th.
