Kindergarten News

In Phonics we will be working on the vowel letter Uu and the sounds of /u/ as in umbrella and unicorn. We will focus on the short vowel sound like up, under, and uncle. Please continue to review all letters learned and blending 2, 3, and 4 letter words. We will NOT have Show and Tell; instead we will be doing reports on some states of the United States. Students will be showing and telling some information about an assigned state as part of an oral report and research project! (Information was sent home on Wed., Jan. 13th.)

· In Reading we will begin Unit 3 with the story Little Panda by Joanne Ryder. This is an informational text, and we will be talking about “Animals Grow and Change”. We will focus on the skill—compare and contrast and will work with the letter sounds of /n/ and /b/. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

· In Math we will continue with Chapter 7: Number Patterns. We will be learning to count to 100 by ones, twos, fives, and tens. We will also be working with odd and even numbers. Take some time to practice counting to 100!

· A big Thank You goes out to the PTO for their generous gift of games/puzzles for our classroom for indoor recess and for the NS T-shirts. Students received their blue North Schuylkill Elementary T-shirts as a gift from the PTO before Christmas. Students are welcome to wear their shirts for spirit days and gym class days, however we are asking that parents keep in mind the T-shirts will be needed for class field trips and possibly some other school activities. Please keep then on hand for such events! (Keep in mind that if your child’s shirt is lost or damaged, parents will be responsible for purchasing a new one.)

· Our class has earned a class pizza party for being the top class for the PTO Fundraiser. A tentative date of Wednesday, January 20th –end of the 2nd marking period, has been selected to celebrate! Congrats on a job well done!!!!

Just a few reminders:

There will be NO SCHOOL for students on Monday, January 18th due to a teacher in-service day. ENJOY!

January Scholastic book orders and money for anyone interested in ordering this month are due on Wednesday, Jan. 20th.

The 3rd marking period begins on Thursday, January 21st and report cards are scheduled to go home on Friday, January 22nd.

Tuesday, January 19th will be Day 6 on the special classes’ schedule. Students will need library books for exchange.
