Week of February 20-24, 2017

Kindergarten News

School will be CLOSED Monday, February 20^th due to President’s Day.  School will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 21^st.

*For Reading we will finish the story One Little Mouse! by Dori Chaconas and introduce the classic traditional tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears as retold by Valeri Gorbachev.  We will review the comprehension skill, character and the letter sound /g/.  Watch for the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder.  **Don’t forget to practice your high frequency sight word flashcards!

            *In Math we will finish Topic 7:  Understanding Addition.  Review vocabulary; number story, join, plus sign, and addition sentence.  Continue to practice joining setts and counting how many altogether.    

            *This month’s AR “Book Buddy” recording sheet and books are due back to school on Tuesday, February 28^th.  The goal for the month is 15 stories/books.  Students who meet the monthly goals will receive a Pizza Hut coupon and monthly treat! 

            *Kindergarten registration for the 2017-2018 school year will be held March 13-17, 2017.  Registration is open to all residents of the NS School District.  Please pass along this info. to anyone with children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall.  Appointments should be scheduled with the office. 

            *Toothbrush charts are due back by the week ending March 3^rd.  Any student who returns his/her chart will receive a “dental health” treat from Mrs. Potts.  (Remember to continue to eat healthy foods, brush and floss your teeth, and visit a dentist at least once a year to keep your smile looking great!)

            * Friday, March 3^rd is NSE’s Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  Throughout the upcoming weeks we will be reading some great books by Dr. Seuss and making some fun things to go along with the stories.  Some students from Bloomsburg University will visit our classroom on Friday, 3/3 to read and to do a follow up activity with the students.

*Newspaper in Education Week is a program sponsored by the Pottsville Republican & Herald to promote interest in the newspaper in our schools.  It will be starting on Monday, March 6^th and continue through Friday, March 10^th.  **Information with details will be sent home in the upcoming weeks.

            *The 4^th annual NSE Chinese auction will be held at NSE this year on Saturday, April 8^th and Sunday, April 9^th.  You may “Shop and Drop” from 10:00 to 5:00 on Saturday and 12:00-3:00 on Sunday.  The auction will start promptly at 3:00 on Sunday. Every student will receive a free sheet of tickets if they attend the auction. Donations of prizes are greatly appreciated!! Tuesday, February 21^st is Day 5 on the special classes’ schedule.  **Boys and girls will need Library books for exchange on Thursday, February 23^rd.  (Please note that if school is cancelled—the special classes get bumped so students do not miss a special class.)
