Week of October 24-28, 2016

Kindergarten News 

**This week we will be reviewing letter Aa and its two sounds, short /a/ as in cat and long /a/ as in acorn, and learning the consonant letter Ss as in sun, snake, and Saturday.  Please continue to review all the letters we have learned so far.    Don’t forget to practice with letter tiles on Wednesday nights!!

**In Reading we will begin to read the story Nature Spy.  We will be looking at what we can learn about nature when we look closely.   We will focus on learning the comprehension skill setting and practice the learned high frequency words. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter to be sent home!  **Continue to practice sight word flashcards/camera words daily!!

**For Math we have finished up with Topic 1, so be sure to review counting sets/objects to 5, comparing sets, writing and reading numbers to 5.   Topic 2 will continue with comparing and ordering 0-5.  We will compare using more, fewer, and same as and learn ordinal numbers through fifth.   Be sure to review, sign, and return Topic 1 Test when it comes home.

**Red Ribbon Week campaign is set for October 24-28, 2016.  The theme is “You Only Live Once (YOLO)!” – Check out the week’s scheduled dress days on your October calendars (Mon. 10/24—wear sweats; Tues. 10/25—wear crazy socks; Wed. 10/26—clothes backwards; Thurs. 10/27—crazy hair day; Friday 10/28—wear Spartan Spirit clothing

**School Photo Make Up/Re-take Day will be Tuesday, October 25^th @ NSE.  Please make sure if your child is having picture retakes to send his/her first package of pictures with him/her that day.  Questions regarding picture packages, contact PSP at 1-800-248-6394. 

**Friday, October 28^th will be the school-wide Halloween parade/party. The parade will begin at 2:00 pm with the Kindergarten students and end with 6^th grade.  Students will parade in front of the HOME side bleachers at the HS stadium, weather permitting.  ALL are welcome to come to see the children parade. (**Please refer to the parade note sent home Thurs. 10/20) Your child should NOT wear his/her costume to school!  Please send the costume to school in a bag with your child’s name on the outside.  Students will get dressed in costumes in the classroom.  Keep in mind students will be dressing at school, so keep the costumes as simple as possible.  (No spraying hair at school, or a face full of make-up at school)  **Unfortunately due to the limited time and Kindergarten leading the parade, we will not be having parent helpers in for Halloween.  After students parade we will have a snack, maybe a quick game of Pass the Pumpkin and prepare for dismissal.  In the past we found there really wasn’t time for a “party”.  Parents are welcome to come and watch the parade at the HS Stadium!! Be sure to be there early as Kindergarten will be first!! 

**The Kindergarten Field Trip will be Thursday, December 1^st.  Students will be going to see the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble at the Alvina Krause Theatre in Bloomsburg.  The Show is “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some)”.    More details will be sent home next month. 

**The Book Fair ended Friday, 10/21.  Thank you to ALL the parent volunteers who helped at the fair and also to all who purchased books.  Happy reading!

Monday, October 24^th will be Day 7—Library, and students will need library books for exchange.  **Gym class will be Wednesday, October 26^th so be sure wear sneakers and gym attire!
