Week of September 26-30, 2016

Kindergarten News
This week we will be starting our 4th story for Reading, Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten.  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home on Monday.  We will be talking about People in Communities and will be learning how to classify and categorize.   Continue to read at home and practice the high frequency words; I, am, the, and little; practice rhyming and counting syllables in words and identifying the letters from Aa-Zz.   This week we will begin working with the letters Ll, Oo, and Gg and will practice letter sounds and blending sounds to read the words log and go. When practicing letter sounds we will learn both short o as in octopus and long o as in overalls.

**Word Lists for “Camera Words”/ sight words, were checked this past week!  Check the list enclosed in your child’s folder (PLASTIC SHEET).  Please keep the list there, but use it to study the appropriate list(s) for your child.  Lists should be checked every week or week and a half as time allows.  Be sure to practice daily!!

September “AR” Book Buddy recording sheets will be due on Friday, Sept. 30th.  Any student who has read 15 or more books will receive a monthly treat!!

For Math we will be finishing up with Topic 15: Position and Location of Shapes.  Be sure to review daily practice pages and review the positional words/concepts inside, outside, in front of, behind, next to, above, below, on, left, and right.  Our next topic will be Topic 16:  Analyzing, Comparing, and Composing Shapes.  Review the 2 and 3 dimensional shapes circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, cube, cylinder, cone, and sphere.  Please review, sign, and return tests as they come home in RETURN.

Our Science theme for the week will be APPLES.  Students are asked to bring in an apple (or 2) on Monday, September 26th.  **The apple can be any size, color, or kind.  Each day of the week we will use the apples for sorting, graphing, and/or tasting!  We will also kick-off the theme by celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on Monday! It should be a sweet week!!!

With fall and the cooler weather upon us, please be sure your child has the proper clothing for a ½ hour outside recess.  Kindergarten tries to get out for “fresh air” and time to run around whenever the weather allows.  Temperatures can vary from morning to afternoon and sometimes the shady areas of the playground are chilly.  Better to be prepared with a jacket/sweater/sweatshirt than be underdressed.  Also, please have your child practice zippering and/or buttoning his/her coat and “pulling” the sleeves right-side out before attempting to put it on.  Thank you!!!

Anyone interested in joining the NSE PTO will need to sign-up and send along $3.00 for yearly dues no later than Friday, October 7th!

The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 6th.   All volunteers who will be participating at the Fall Festival MUST have all 4 clearances (Child Abuse, Criminal, FBI Fingerprinting, and Mandated Reporter Training) on file in the office.  The Fall Festival is not a PTO event, so you do not have to be a member of the PTO to help.  **Anyone who has not yet sent in his/her $3.00 donation for the Fall Festival is asked to do so ASAP.

October Scholastic Book Orders will be due by Tuesday, October 11th.    (Orders can be placed online with the classroom code GJXGV or sent to the teacher in an envelope.)

Monday, September 26th will be Day 9—Gym, on our special classes’ schedule.  **Students will need sneakers on Monday, 9/26 and library books for exchange on Thursday, 9/29!
