Week of May 2-6, 2016

Kindergarten News
For Reading we will begin Unit 6:  Building Our Homes.  The first story will be titled, “Building with Dad”.  We will be talking about how a school is built.  We will review the short vowel sounds and will finish our work with the sounds /y/ and /kw/ for the letters Y and Q. On Wednesday, 5/4, the girls will finally get to be Queens for a Day!
For Math we will continue with Topic 13, Sorting, Classifying, Counting, and Categorizing Data.  Students will learn to tell how things are different, how they are alike, and to sort things into different groups.  Take some time and review the daily work mats.
Our class participated in the “A Child’s View” writing for the Republican-Herald newspaper.  The entries and a class photo were published in a supplement on Thursday, April 28th.  Students answered the question “What do you want to be when you grow up and why?”  Be sure to check this out!
The monthly PTO meeting for May will be held on Monday night, 5/2 @ 6:30.  All are invited and encouraged to attend.
NSE will be having a Scholastic Book Fair from Mon, May 9-Friday, May 13.  Students will be able to shop at school and there will also be a Parent Shopping Night on Monday, May 9th from 4-7 pm.  (Due to the book fair and limited time before school closes for the summer, Mrs. Potts will NOT be sending home any more classroom book orders.  Thank you to ALL who have participated this year.  Happy Reading!)
**Please note that Friday, May 6th will be the last day the NSE library will be open for students to borrow books.  All library books will need to be returned on our next exchange day—Wednesday, May 18th.
Our Accelerated Reader “Book Buddy” program will END on Friday May 13th.  May recording sheets will be sent home in your child’s folder, but book bags and books will no longer be sent home.  Boys and girls can continue to read at home and titles can be recorded.  May recording sheets will be due back by 5/13.  **The goal for May will be 8+ books.
In May the Reading teachers will begin the end-of-the-year testing with each Kindergarten child.  Children will need to write a dictated sentence or two, recognize, write, and give the sound of every letter of the alphabet, be able to provide a word that begins with every letter sound, and be able to write as many words correctly in 10 min.  Please review at home!!
Monday, May 2nd will be Day 5 –Music class.  Students will need sneakers and gym attire on Friday, May 6th.
