Week of January 25-29, 2016

Kindergarten News
For Reading this week we will read the story, The Lion and the Mouse. We will introduce the comprehension skill, main idea.  We will review the short /o/ sound in words and continue to work with the high frequency words; they, of, and you.   Be sure to practice sight word flashcards often and watch for the new Family Times news!
Just a reminder:  January AR “Book Buddy” recording sheets will be due on Friday, January 29th.  The goal for the month is 15 books.  Any student who reads and records 15 or more books will receive a Pizza Hut reward coupon.  Happy Reading!!
In Math we will continue with Topic 6; Numbers to 100.  Continue to practice counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s and writing numbers to 20.  Take some time to review daily practice pages!
Report cards were sent home on Friday, January 22nd! Please keep in mind that this is a standards based report card and it is not your typical report card with “grades”.  The scoring rubric is designed with the standards that are expected to be met by the end of Kindergarten.  Your child’s goal is to score a 3, or mastery of the standard, and if he/she has scored a 1 or 2 in any areas, then these are the areas that your child needs to strengthen and improve by the end of Kindergarten.  Only some of the standards are scored during the 2nd marking period, so if you see empty areas on the report card then these standards will be scored in the 3rd and/or 4th periods.  **Be sure to SIGN and RETURN the report card ENVELOPE.   **REPORT CARDS DO NOT NEED TO BE RETURNED—JUST THE SIGNED EMPTY ENVELOPE!  (If you have any questions or concerns, then please contact the teacher.)  DIBELS results for January will be sent along with report cards and do not need to be returned.  Please use the attached DIBELS pages to review scores and goals and to continue to practice for the end of the year testing.
Hip, Hip, Hooray! Our 100th day is just nine school days away!!!  On Wednesday, February 3rd students are asked to dress as if they were 100 years old! **Please note that if school is cancelled, the 100th day will be moved to the next day.  (Please watch for a 100th day newsletter enclosed in your child’s folder!)
The Valentine’s Day party will be held on Thursday, February 11th from 1:30-3:00.   **A Valentine’s Class List will be sent home to help you prepare valentines for the party.  (PARENT HELPERS SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED A NOTE—Fri. 1/22)

Monday, January 25th will be Day 1--Computers.  Library exchange will be Tuesday, January 26th, so please be sure to pack library books on 1/26.  (**Boys and girls will need sneakers and gym attire on Thursday, January 28th.)
