Week of December 14-18, 2015

Kindergarten News
We will finish reading the story Little Panda by Joanne Ryder and begin the next story, Little Quack by Lauren Thompson.  It will be an animal fantasy story.  The comprehension skill we will target is plot, or the “what happens part of the story”.  We will be learning the consonant letter Rr and its sound /r/ as in rabbit and reindeer.  Watch for the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder!  Practice high frequency sight words—especially the newly added cards!
In Math we will continue to compare and order numbers 0-10 and will try to wrap up Topic 4 before the holiday break.  Review the daily practice pages with your child and practice the teen numbers (13-19).
Boys and girls have begun writing in a “Holiday Journal” each day.  They are learning to use spaces between words, sound out words, use capital letters to start a sentence, as well as with proper nouns/names, and to use a period at the end of a telling sentence.  Be sure to ask your child what he/she wrote about at school!
Our theme for the days leading up to holiday break will include discussions about Hanukah, Kwanza, and Christmas.  Boys and girls will be learning about different celebrations of the holiday and will be busy with some holiday crafts.
NSE PTO Presented Brainshowmania! on Friday, December 11th in the NSE gymnasium.
Just a reminderthe Bowl For Kids Sake pledge envelopes were due back by Friday, December 11th.  Students bowled during gym class on Monday 12/7.  THANK YOU for your participation and support!
Please remind your child to keep up with his/her schoolwork and behavior and keep in mind that Santa is watching and waiting to hear daily updates from Max, our elf on the shelf Naughty-Nice reporter!!

Students will need to be prepared for colder weather @ recess.  Warm coats, gloves or mittens, hats and/or scarves are needed.  Recess is a half an hour and unless the ground is snow-covered or it is too cold we will try to get outside for “fresh-air”.
Kindergarten will be having a “Polar Express” day on Wednesday, December 23rd.  Students are asked to wear their pajamas to school to dress like the characters in the book.  **Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided for snack!  There will be an early dismissal at 1:00 so there will be NO BREAKFAST served.
December AR “Book Buddy” recording sheets will be due January 4th.  The goal for the month is 15 books.  Keep up the great work and Keep Reading!!

Monday, December 14th is Day 9 – Gym and students will need sneakers and gym attire.  **Library class will be Thursday, December 17th so be sure to pack books for exchange!
