Week of October 5-9, 2015

Kindergarten News
·       We will be starting our 5th story for Reading, Smash! Crash!  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home on Monday.  Our focus will be on the story’s character.  We will be working with the consonant letter Mm and the beginning and final sound /m/ in words.  Continue to read at home and practice the high frequency words, practice rhyming and counting syllables in words and identifying the letters from Aa-Zz. Your child should be able to read the little readers that come home on day 2 of the new story!  The past week we began working with the letters Ll, Oo, and Gg and practiced letter sounds and blending sounds to read the words log and go.  We learned some letters are consonants and some are vowels.  When practicing letter sounds we learned both short o as in octopus and long o as in overalls.

·       For Math we will work with Topic 16; Analyzing, Comparing, and Composing Shapes.  Review the 2 and 3 dimensional shapes circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, cube, cylinder, cone, and sphere.   Continue to review the daily math practice pages as well.  Please review, sign, and return Topic 15 Tests as they come home in RETURN.

·       The PTO school store is now open.  Kindergarten students will be able to shop on a MONDAY from 8:20-8:45.  Students are asked to shop ONLY on this day and at this time.  Please do not put school store money in your child’s folder. (Teachers will NOT see it until after the store closes.)  **Students should keep it separate in book bags where THEY can reach it easily for shopping BEFORE homeroom.

·       New October “AR” Book Buddy recording sheets are enclosed in your child’s bag.  Any student who reads15 or more books will receive a monthly treat and a “punch” on his/her AR ticket, and will be eligible for prizes at the end of the school year!!!  Congratulations to all the students who met and/or exceeded their September goal!  (Don’t forget library books can also be recorded on the recording sheets.)

·       All students should have received their “Free” Field Trip T-shirt from the PTO.  Shirts can be worn any gym class days and/or spirit days, but will NEED to be worn for the class field trip later in the school year! --So don’t lose it!!

·      October 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week so please take some time at home to discuss fire safety with your child and family.  Be sure to have a practice fire drill and create an escape plan with a designated meeting place.

·      Friday, October 9th is an ACT 80 ½ day; Dismissal will be 12:00.  **Please note there will be NO BREAKFAST or SNACK due to the early dismissal.   There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, October 12th, Columbus Day, due to a scheduled Teacher In-Service day.  **School will reopen on Tuesday, October 13th.
