Week of September 21-25, 2015

Kindergarten News 

~ Our Reading story this week will be Plaidypus Lost.  We will be talking about how families cooperate, we will be learning to recognize the letters Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, and Ss, and we will practice the comprehension skill: sequence.  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home in your child’s folder.  Continue to read at home, talk about story characters and setting, and recognize the letters from Aa-Nn, as well as the high frequency words I, am, at, yes, no, the and little.  **PLEASE NOTE, sight word flash cards will be sent home daily in the inner plastic sheet of your child’s folder.  Please return Ziploc bag to the folder after practicing, so new words can be added at school throughout the year.  Word List 2 or 3 is enclosed in the folder too!

~In Math we will be starting Topic 15: Position and Location of Shapes. We will continue to identify and describe 2 and 3 dimensional shapes such as; circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, cone, sphere, cube, and cylinder.  Please take some time to review the daily practice pages that your child brings home in his/her KEEP side of the communication folder.  Also, please review, sign and return Topic 14 Test.

~ For Science we will begin to work with Chapter 1 The Nature of Science.  We will be discussing How we share what we learn, Tools we use to observe, Staying safe in science class, and will investigate How do things look?

~Students have been doing a terrific job with completing HOMEWORK and bringing it back to school on time.  Thank you to the parents for all your cooperation and support with homework!!

~Parents please check folders daily and remove all “KEEP” items.  It becomes difficult to handle folders with too many papers inside (both for the students and teachers).  Thanks!!

~Wednesday, September 23^rd is the First Day of Autumn/Fall and we will be starting an “APPLE” theme on Thursday, Sept. 24^th and continue it through the remainder of September.  Students are asked to bring in an apple on Monday, September 28^th.  The apple can be any size, color, or kind.  Each day of that week we will use the apples for sorting, graphing, and/or tasting.  We will also kick-off the theme by celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on Friday, September 25^th!  It should be a sweet week!!!

~ Due to the changes in temperature inside and outside the school, some students may want to bring a sweater or sweatshirt without a hood to keep in their cubbies in case they feel chilly!  Jackets with hoods should not be worn inside during the school day.

Just a few reminders:

~If you have not already returned your PTO Field Trip (FREE) T-shirt order form, please do so ASAP. 

~The annual Children’s Book Drive (co-sponsored by the Republican-Herald and Child Development, Inc.) is now underway.  All donations should be suitable for children up to 12 years old.  Deadline for books is Monday, October 5^th. 

~Parents and Guardians interested in joining the PTO should return a sign up sheet and $3.00 for yearly dues no later than Oct. 5^th.  The required clearances must be on file in the office before you are allowed into the school to help as a PTO member.

 Monday, Sept. 21^st will be Day 5- Music, on our special classes’ schedule.  **Boys and girls will need sneakers for gym class on Day 9, Friday, September 25^th.
