Week of September 14-18, 2015

Kindergarten Newsletter
We have finished our second week of school and most of the students are adjusting very well!

We are using the behavior calendar at the back of your child’s communication folder.  Check the calendar daily to see what “kind” of day your child had at school and discuss any concerns/notes with him/her.

On Monday, we will begin our 2nd Reading story, We Are So Proud. We will work on recognizing the letters Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm. and Nn. Watch for your Family Times newsletter and take home story—Am I?, to come home in your child’s folder.  Continue to read at home, talk about story characters (who the story is about) and setting (where and when the story takes place), and read the high frequency words I and am.

Word list 1 (I, am, at) will be checked on Friday, 9/11 and if all words are read correctly, then Word List 2 will be sent home for practice.  If more time is needed with list one, then List 1 words will be checked again next week before List 2 is sent home.  Continue to practice sight words daily!!

In Math we will finish working with Topic 14: Identifying and Describing Shapes. Boys and girls should correctly name shapes (rectangles, squares, circles, triangles, and hexagons) regardless of their orientation or overall size and identify shapes as 2 dimensional, “flat” or 3 dimensional “solid”.

Students will have HOMEWORK most Monday through Thursday nights.  Check the RETURN side of your child’s folder for homework assignments and be sure to check what we’ve been working on at school.  Remind your child to RETURN the completed work to school the next school day.  Not only does homework reinforce what we are working on at school, but also it teaches your child responsibility.  Thank you for your support!!!

Boys and girls have been doing a Super Job with their AR “Book Buddy” books and bags.  Remember, any books your child and you read together at home can be recorded on the monthly reading log enclosed in your child’s “Book Buddy” bag.  **Also, please be sure to complete the log when the book enclosed is read.  Some books are being returned without being recorded.

Each Friday morning our class will meet with their 4th grade Reading Buddies from Mrs. Reinoehl and Mrs. Eger’s homeroom.  Boys and girls have been matched up with 4th graders to listen to stories and eventually practice their own reading skills.  Be sure to ask your child about his/her buddy.

There will be a PTO meeting on Monday, Sept. 14th in the cafeteria beginning at 6:30.  All are invited and encouraged to attend.

We have begun our snack rotation.  Snack notices will come home in your child’s folder as your scheduled day approaches.  Thank you to all the families who have already provided the group snacks! J

Students have begun using the computers at school and many are enjoying practicing letters and sounds with two websites in particular:  Starfall.com and ABCya.com   Both websites are free and do not require special logins.  You may want to check them out and reward your child with some fun and educational practice time!!!

FYI:  Due to a scheduling conflict/mix-up, our class will see Mrs. Schwartz for Music class—not Ms. Shughart, as printed on your child’s special classes’ schedule in your child’s folder.  Music will still be DAYS 5 & 10 just with Mrs. Schwartz instead.

Monday, Sept. 14th will be Day 10, Music; Tuesday, Sept. 15th will be Day 1, Computers; Wednesday, Sept. 16th will Library; Thursday, Sept. 17th will be Art; and Friday, Sept. 18th will be Gym—wear sneakers.

Thank you for all of your cooperation!!!
