Week of January 26-30, 2015

Kindergarten News

·      For Reading we will continue with Unit 3 with the story Then and Now.  It is a nonfiction book and we will talk about the comprehension strategy “draw conclusions”.  We will also work with the initial and medial short /o/ sound and the letter Oo.   Watch for your new Family Times news and practice new high frequency sight words; you, of, and they!

·      In Math we will be finishing Topic 5: Numbers to 11-20 and will begin Topic 6: Numbers to 100.  Review counting, reading, and writing numbers 0-20 and ordering numbers forward and backward.  Also practice counting by 1s and 10s to 100.              

·      Tuesday, February 4^th is our tentative 100^th day of school!  We will be planning a celebration.  Watch next week for a 100^th day newsletter with more information.

·      Report cards are scheduled to go home on Thursday, January 29^th.   Please keep in mind that this is a standards based report card and it is not your typical report card with “grades”.  The scoring rubric is designed with the standards that are expected to be met by the end of Kindergarten.  Your child’s goal is to score a 3, or mastery of the standard, and if he/she has scored a 1 or 2 in any areas, then these are the areas that your child needs to strengthen and improve by the end of Kindergarten.  Only some of the standards are scored during the 2^nd marking period, so if you see an N/A on the report card then these standards will be scored in the 3^rd and/or 4^th periods.  **Be sure to SIGN and RETURN the report card ENVELOPE and rubrics.   **REPORT CARDS DO NOT NEED TO BE RETURNED—JUST THE SIGNED EMPTY ENVELOPE and Stamped Rubrics!  (If you have any questions or concerns, then please contact the teacher.)  DIBELS results for January will be sent along with report cards and do not need to be returned.  Please use the attached DIBELS pages to review scores and goals and to continue to practice for the end of the year testing.

·      The Valentine’s Day party will be held on Thursday, February 12^th from 1:30-3:00.  (A Valentine’s List of our class will be sent home next week to help you prepare valentines for the party.) **Parent helpers will be contacted soon with details.

·      Just a Reminder:  NSE is hosting Jump Rope For Heart on Wednesday, February 11^th.  **Be sure to return any and all donations in provided envelope. 

     Friday, January 23^rd was Grace’s last day at NSE.  Grace is moving and will be attending a new school.  We will certainly miss her and wish her all the best with her new Kindergarten class!

Tuesday, January 27^th will be Day 1.  Students will need library books on Thursday, 1/29.
