Week of January 19-23, 2015

Kindergarten News
There WILL be school on Monday, January 19th for students due to a change in schedule to make up a previous snow day.  Lunch choices will be: chicken sticks, meatball hoagie, or salad.

We will be starting the next story farfallina and marcel for Reading.  In this book we will talk about the comprehension strategy “plot” and how friendships are formed and can change.  We will also be learning the letter Ff.   Watch for your new Family Times news!

In Math we will be continuing Topic 5; Numbers to 20Practice counting, reading, and writing numbers to 20 and take some time to review daily practice pages!
The 3rd marking period begins this week and report cards are scheduled to go home on Thursday, January 29th.   Please keep in mind that this is a standards based report card and it is not your typical report card with “grades”.  The scoring rubric is designed with the standards that are expected to be met by the end of Kindergarten.  Your child’s goal is to score a 3, or mastery of the standard, and if he/she has scored a 1 or 2 in any areas, then these are the areas that your child needs to strengthen and improve by the end of Kindergarten.  Only some of the standards are scored during the 2nd marking period, so if you see an N/A on the report card then these standards will be scored in the 3rd and/or 4th periods.  **Be sure to SIGN and RETURN the report card and rubrics sent home.
January Scholastic book orders are due by Wednesday, January 21st for anyone interested in ordering this month.
Students will participate in “Brainshow Mania” a game-show style assembly on Thursday, January 22nd from 1:00-1:45 in the gymnasium.  Be sure to ask your child about the program!!
Since we are soon half way through Kindergarten, the teachers are asking that each student practice tying his/her shoes.  This is a skill that we would like to see your child master before first grade.  Remember, Practice Makes Perfect!
Congratulations to all students who successfully completed their dinosaur reports!  It was a fun and educational way to learn about some of the dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago.  **Thank you to all the parents who helped “prepare” the children for their first oral report. (Our next oral report will be with the letter Uu for United States.)
