Week of January 12-16, 2015

Kindergarten News (updated)
In Reading we will continue with Unit 3 with the story George Washington Visits. The skill
cause and effect will be introduced along with the /d/ and /k/ sounds for the letters Dd and Kk.
We will work with the K and C Spelling Rule.  The rule is that we spell the /k/ sound with the
letter k when the sound is followed by the letters e, i, and y.   We spell the /k/ sound with the
letter c when the sound is followed by the letters a, o, u, and any consonant.  For example:
                        K before e, i, or y                                    C before a, o, u, or any consonant
keg            kid            milky                                       cat               cot               cup               clip
Watch for your new Family Times newsletter and remember to review the high frequency sight words! (especially the new words; see and look).  To reinforce the letter sounds /d/ and /k/ the boys will be “Kings for a Day” on Tuesday, January 13th and the students will be presenting dinosaur reports Tues.-Tues. (1/13-1/19).  Be sure to check your child’s date for his/her dinosaur report and help him/her prepare and practice.  **Detailed information and dinosaur report pages were sent home on Wed. 1/7.
In Math we will be working on Topic 5; Numbers to 20.  Practice writing numbers and counting sets.  Please review daily practice pages.    Please sign and return Topic 4 Test and Benchmark Test 1-4.
DIBELS testing is scheduled for Wednesday, 1/14 & Thursday, 1/15 for Kindergarten.  Boys and girls will be tested on First Sound Fluency (FSF), Letter Naming Fluency (LNF), Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF), and Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF).  Students have been practicing at school and also NEED to practice at home.  The recommended goal for FSF for mid-year is 52+, the LNF goal is 52+, the PSF goal is 51+, and NWF is 34+.  Students are timed for 1 minute for each area.  Practice worksheets were sent home at conference time, as well as, monthly letter naming and nonsense words’ practice pages.
The second marking period will be ending next week and we will continue testing for report cards.  Students will need to identify letters, letter sounds, numbers 0-20, count orally to 100 by 1’s and 10’s, identify basic shapes, and rhyme words.  Students will be asked to read learned high frequency sight words, identify parts of a book including the roles of the author and illustrator and story elements, such as characters, setting, and key details.  Please review these skills with your child.              (**Report cards will be sent home on Friday, January 23rd.)
On Tuesday, January 13th Mrs. Hull, our guidance counselor, will visit for her monthly meeting with the class.  Take some time and ask your child what he/she learned and discussed!
**January Scholastic book orders and money for anyone interested in ordering this month are due on Wednesday, January 21st.
FYI: School will be CLOSED for students on Monday, January 19th due to a scheduled teacher in-service day.
Tuesday, January 13th will be Day 3 on the special classes’ schedule.  Students will need library books on Tuesday, January 13th and sneakers and gym attire on Thursday, January 15th.
**Just a few friendly reminders:  Students are NOT to wear plaid and shirts need to have a collar; except on gym days and/or spirit days, and if school is CLOSED due to inclement weather, then our special classes’ schedule is just bumped to the next school day.
