Week of December 15-19, 2014

Kindergarten News
In Math we will continue to compare and order numbers 0-10 and wrap up Topic 4 before the holiday break.  Review the daily practice pages with your child!
We will finish reading the story Little Panda by Joanne Ryder and begin the next story, Little Quack by Lauren Thompson.  It will be an animal fantasy story.  The comprehension skill we will target is plot, or the “what happens part of the story”.  We will be learning the consonant letter Rr and its sound /r/ as in rabbit and reindeer.  Watch for the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder!  Practice high frequency sight words—especially the newly added cards!
For Science, we have been learning about the Earth and Sky and talking about the seasons, the changes in weather, and what makes night and day!
Our theme for the days leading up to holiday break will include discussions about Hanukah, Kwanza, and Christmas.  Boys and girls will be learning about different celebrations of the holiday and will be busy with some holiday crafts.
Kindergarten will be having a “Polar Express” day on Tuesday, December 23rd.  Students are asked to wear their pajamas to school to dress like the characters in the book.  **Hot chocolate and cookies will be served for snack!  There will be an early dismissal at 1:00 so there will be NO BREAKFAST served.  (Lunch for Kindergarten will be from 9:15-9:45 and our special class will be 12:00-12:30)
Please remind your child to keep up with his/her schoolwork and behavior and keep in mind that Santa is watching and waiting to hear daily updates from Max, our elf on the shelf Naughty-Nice reporter!!
December AR “Book Buddy” recording sheets will be due January 5th.  The goal for the month is 16 books.  Congratulations to all the boys and girls who met the goal for November and those who have already met December’s goal!!  Keep up the great work and Keep Reading!!
Students will need to be prepared for colder weather @ recess.  Warm coats, gloves or mittens, hats and/or scarves are needed.  Recess is a half an hour and unless the ground is snow-covered or it is too cold we will try to get outside for “fresh-air”.
**Please note:  Whenever school is CLOSED due to inclement weather, the rotation schedule is just bumped to the next school day, so students do not miss the scheduled special class for the cancelled day.
Monday, December 15th is Day 2 – Music.   **Remember to pack library books for Book Exchange on Tuesday, December 16th  and wear sneakers and gym attire for Gym on Thursday, December 18th.
