Week of November 17-21, 2014

Kindergarten News
Thank you to ALL the parents who attended Parent/Teacher conferences on Monday, November 10th.  Your interest and support in your child’s education are greatly appreciated and important to your child’s success!

**In Reading we will read the story A Bed for the Winter by Karen Wallace.  It will be an informational text.  We will discuss Fiction and Non-Fiction, winter homes, and work on the comprehension skill, sequence.  We will be working on the short /i/ sound as in inch, igloo, and Indian.  Watch for the new Family Times and Phonics Reader to be sent home.  Continue to practice the high frequency words; I, am, a, the, to, is, have, little, my, like, we, he, and for.

**In Math we will be finishing up Topic 3:  Numbers 6-10.  Students should be practicing writing numbers from 0-10 correctly and continue counting by 1’s to 100.  Take some time at home to review the daily practice pages completed at school.

**Ms. Clarissa Geary, Director of Education, Training and Volunteer Services, will be presenting a Personal Body Safety Program to the class on Monday, 11/17 from 9:00-9:30.  This message encourages healthy decision-making and communication.  Please ask your child what he/she learned and discussed!

**We will begin preparing for “Thanksgiving”.  During the next two weeks students will learn about the first Thanksgiving, will make pilgrim and Native American/Indian costumes, and will begin to learn a poem or song for the holiday.  We will make a Thanksgiving bracelet and will also discuss being “thankful”.  The students will even get to use a Native American name for a day!

**The NS high school student council sponsors the Feed-A-Friend program in our school district as its fall service project.  The Student Council will be collecting non-perishable food items and cash donations to help our less fortunate neighbors enjoy a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.  The project will end on Tuesday, November 18th.  Collection boxes @ NSE will be located in the lobby and monetary donations can be given to the secretaries in the office.  (Please make checks payable to “The Salvation Army” and note in the memo line “Feed-A-Friend”.    Monetary donations are used to purchase perishable items like turkeys, bread, milk, butter, etc…)

**FYI:  Anyone who ordered from the PTO Fall Book Fundraiser is to pick up his/her order(s) in the NSE gymnasium on Thursday, November 20th from 4:00-7:00 PM.

**The NSE school and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Schuylkill Co. are teaming up to raise funds for the Big Brothers Big Sisters School-Based mentoring program.  Monday, Nov. 17th will be the kick-off for the Bowl For Kids Sake Event.  Pledge envelopes were sent home Thursday, 11/13 and will be due back to school by Friday, December 5th.   Students are encouraged but not obligated to participate in the fundraising activity.  Students will bowl during their gym classes until all students have had an opportunity to “Bowl for Kids Sake”.

**Monday, November 17th will be Day 2 on the special classes’ schedule.  We will have Music class.  Tuesday, November 18th will be library so don’t forget library books for exchange.  Students will be painting in Art class on Wednesday, November 19th, so please dress appropriately (NO NEW CLOTHES) and/or plan to bring & wear a “painting” shirt!  Boys and Girls will need sneakers and gym attire on Thursday, November 20th for Day 5-gym class.
