Week of October 6-10, 2014

Kindergarten News
We have finished the story Smash! Crash! and we will begin the story Dig, Dig, Digging in Reading.  We will be talking about how machines help people.  We will be practicing the sound /t/ and the skill classifying and categorizing.  Watch for the new Family Times newsletter and continue to review the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to, and a when your read together.  Be sure to practice letter identification/naming, letter sounds, blending, and alphabet order when letter tiles come home for homework on Wednesday night!
For Math we will begin Topic 1:  One to Five.  Students will learn how to read, write, and count numbers from 1-5.  Be sure to review the daily practice pages that your child brings home in his/her folder! **Topic 16 Test will come home early in the week.  Please review, sign, and return!
October 5-11 is Fire Prevention Week so please take some time at home to discuss fire safety with your child and family.  Be sure to have a practice fire drill and create an escape plan with a designated meeting place.
The School-wide Book Fair will take place in the Library starting Monday, October 6th**Parents will be able to shop with their child on Monday night from 4-7 pm if interested.  Mrs. Potts’ class will also be shopping in school on Tuesday, October 7th.  If your child will be shopping at school, please be sure $$ is in an envelope or Ziploc bag marked for Book Fair shopping with your child’s name marked as well.  (Classroom Scholastic book order forms will be sent home the following week for anyone who did not shop the book fair or who would prefer to order online.)
We soon will be beginning our writing program called Kid Writing.  Several times a week we will break into “centers” and students will work in small groups working on different activities while the teacher helps students write and illustrate their own stories.  When our Kid Writing “books” are filled they will be sent home for you to keep.  Hopefully we will have a couple of samples for viewing at Parent Conferences on Monday, November 10th
Anyone who has not yet turned in FALL FESTIVAL MONEY --$4, is asked to try and send it in as soon as possible.  The parents who are planning the FALL FESTIVAL will need to pay for supplies and goodies. **Our Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 9th.  Any parents and/or grandparents who have clearances on file in the office are invited to help.  Students are allowed to dress in GYM clothes even though we do not have gym on Thursday.  Some of the activities may get a little messy so we recommend that students do not wear new clothes.  Also, we will be spending the majority of the day outside (unless it rains) so dress your child for the weather!  Boys and girls are to follow the dress code (NO JEANS).  Sneakers are recommended.
Friday, October 10th is an ACT 80 ½ day.  Dismissal will be 11:45.  **Please note there will be NO BREAKFAST or SNACK due to the early dismissal.  (Lunch for Kindergarten will be from 9:15-9:45 and library 9:45-10:05).  There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, October 13th, Columbus Day, due to a scheduled Teacher In-Service day.  School will reopen on Tuesday, October 14th.
Spartan Spirit/Homecoming week has come to an end!  It was exciting to see the boys and girls show their “Spartan Pride” each day!  Thank you to ALL who participated. J
