Week of October 20-24, 2014

Kindergarten News
**This week we will be reviewing letter Aa and its two sounds, short /a/ as in cat and long /a/ as in acorn, and learning the consonant letter Ss as in sun, snake, and Saturday.  Please continue to review all the letters we have learned so far.    Don’t forget to practice with letter tiles on Wednesday nights!!
**In Reading we will finish with the story Flowers and begin to read the story Nature Spy .  We will be looking at what we can learn about nature when we look closely.   We will focus on learning the comprehension skill setting and practice the learned high frequency words. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter to be sent home!  **Continue to practice sight word flashcards daily!!
**For Math we will be finishing up with Topic 1, so review counting sets/objects to 5, comparing sets, writing and reading numbers to 5.   Topic 2 will continue with comparing and ordering 0-5.  We will compare using more, fewer, and same as and learn ordinal numbers through fifth.   Be sure to review, sign, and return Topic 1 Test.
**We are currently collecting money for the scheduled classroom parties (Halloween and Valentine).   Please send in $5.00 in an envelope with your child’s name and classroom and mark “Party Money” on the outside of the envelope, if you have not already done so. Thank you!!
**Diane Rowland, will visit with our class on Tuesday, October 21st for our monthly guidance lesson.  She will be speaking with the children about Drugs and Alcohol in preparation for the annual Red Ribbon Week, which will be held the last week of October.  Take some time to ask your child what he/she learned and/or discussed at school that day!!
**October Scholastic book orders are due on Tuesday, October 21st!  Anyone interested in ordering this month should be sure to turn in orders and $ to Mrs. Potts OR order online by Tuesday.
**NSE picture re-take/make-up day will be held on Thursday, October 23rd.  Please make sure if your child is having picture retakes to send his/her first package of pictures with him/her that day.  Questions regarding picture packages, contact PSP at 1-800-248-6394.
**Friday, October 31st will be our classroom Halloween parade and party from 1:30-3:00.  Homeroom helpers, who are PTO members and have clearances on file in the office, will be permitted to go to the classroom @ 1:30 but should be at the school a bit earlier to be checked in at the front door (this sometimes takes awhile due to the number of parents entering!)  The parade will begin at 2:00pm.  Students will parade in the upper bus loop.  ALL are welcome to come to see the children parade.  Parties will end by 3:00 pm.  Your child should NOT wear his/her costume to school!  Please send the costume to school in a bag with your child’s name on the outside.  Students will get dressed in costumes with the help of teachers and homeroom helpers.  Keep in mind students will be dressing at school, so keep the costumes as simple as possible.  (No spraying hair at school, or a face full of make-up at school)  **With trick-or-treat approaching, we ask that students do NOT bring candy for snacks at school and limit extra candy in lunch boxes too.  Thanks for your cooperation!
**Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Monday, November 10th from 12:00-6:00.  Please be sure to return conference forms (enclosed in folders) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so a schedule can be made.
