Week of September 15-19, 2014

Kindergarten News
~ Our Reading story this week will be Plaidypus Lost.  We will be talking about how families cooperate, we will be learning to recognize the letters Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, and Ss, and we will practice the comprehension skill: sequence.  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home in your child’s folder.  Continue to read at home, talk about story characters and setting, and recognize the letters from Aa-Nn, as well as the high frequency words I and am.  **PLEASE NOTE, sight word flash cards will be sent home daily in the inner plastic sheet of your child’s folder.  Please return Ziploc bag to the folder after practicing, so new words can be added at school throughout the year.
~In Math we will be starting Topic 15: Position and Location of Shapes.  Students should continue to practice writing numbers 0-9 and sing the number writing verse for each number.  We will continue to identify and describe 2 and 3 dimensional shapes such as; circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, cone, sphere, cube, and cylinder.  Please take some time to review the daily practice pages that your child brings home in his/her KEEP side of the communication folder.  Also, please review, sign and return Topic 14 Test.
~ For Science we will continue with Chapter 1 The Nature of Science.  We will be discussing How we share what we learn, Tools we use to observe, Staying safe in science class, and will investigate How do things look?
~ We have begun practicing writing our first names correctly.  Please watch your child as he/she is writing.  Be sure to check if letters are beginning at the top, not the bottom and also guide him/her to use the lines when forming letters.  Capital/Uppercase letters should only be used at the beginning of names!
~ ATTENTION:  There will be a Fall Festival Planning meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 17h @ 6:30 pm at the Mineshaft in Ashland.  All who would like to help with the preparations and planning are invited and encouraged to attend. (The more parent/grandparent volunteers, the more activities @ the Fall Festival).  There is a Facebook page that you can join North Schuylkill 2014 Fall Festival and also an email address NSfallfestival2014@hotmail.com, that if you send your email address you can be added to the list for updates.   The Fall Festival will be held at the school on Thursday, Oct. 9th.   ** Clearances must be on file in the office to help at the Fall Festival, but anyone can help with the preparations and planning!!!
~Students have been doing a terrific job with completing HOMEWORK and bringing it back to school on time.  Thank you to the parents for all your cooperation and support with homework!!
~An updated class list is enclosed in your child’s folder.  Please note that we welcomed a new student to our class.  Faithmarie joined us Friday (9/12)!
~Parents please check folders daily and remove all “KEEP” items.  It becomes difficult to handle folders with too many papers inside (both for the students and teachers).  Thanks!!
~ Due to the changes in temperature inside and outside the school, some students may want to bring a sweater or sweatshirt to keep in their cubbies in case they feel chilly!
Just a few reminders:
