Week of May 19-23, 2014

Kindergarten News
In Phonics we will be working with combinations ar, or, and er, reviewing digraphs, and reading new decodable readers.

For Reading we will begin Unit 6:  Building Our Homes.  The first story will be titled, “Homes Around the World”.  We will be talking about different homes around the world.  We will review the comprehension skill, compare and contrast.  Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

For Math we will finish up Topic 14, Identifying and Describing Shapes.  Please review the shapes; circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, cube, sphere, cylinder, and cone.  Talk about the number of sides and corners and try to find these shapes around your home!  We will also begin Topic 15, Position and Location of Shapes.

THERE WILL BE NO HOMEWORK for the rest of the school year, but please keep checking your child’s folder.

Kindergarten will practice for graduation on Monday, May 19th and Tuesday, May 20th in the mornings at the High School**Please try to have your child at school for the practices so he/she will know what to do for the evening ceremony on Tuesday.  Students may be walking to the high school, so please dress your child in shoes for walking.
Tuesday, May 20th is the big day!  Kindergarten Graduation will be held in the High School Auditorium beginning at 6:00pm.   Students should arrive at the lower level and report to the gymnasium around 5:30-5:45.   The ceremony will begin promptly at 6:00 PM, so be sure not to be late and allow time for parking!  **There are no reserved seats or a limit to the number of guests per student, therefore, seating is on a first come first serve basis!
**Remember students will be wearing caps and gowns and will NEED to wear a WHITE-COLLARED shirt for the evening performance (NOT to school during the day).  Shoes will be visible so plan accordingly.  Girls should not wear hair accessories that will get in the way of the cap.
**Students will be exiting the auditorium and going to the gym after the performance.  Parents can look for their child in the gym by class/teacher.
PLEASE NOTE:  Graduation caps and gowns must be returned to the teacher after the graduation ceremonyTassels are to be taken home as a keepsake.

Friday, May 23rd will be the PTO Carnival.  This is a day of fun and games put together by the PTO.  Please dress your child for the weather and apply sunscreen as needed.  Students should wear sneakers and clothes for outdoor activities (NO dresses or skirts please!)  **Due to the Carnival the cafeteria will only be serving Deli Hoagies.  There will be NO ALTERNATE lunches.

**ALL library books NEED to be returned ASAP!

The Kindergarten students were ALL recognized as Good Citizens at the school board meeting on Wednesday, May 14th for their participation with the donation of items for the military men and women and their donations of “loose change” for the Relay for Life.  Boys and girls received an ice cream treat on Thursday, 5/15 as a reward for their support and generosity.  Many thanks to those who sent in donations!!
