Week of April 7-11, 2014

Kindergarten News
  • This week in Phonics we will be learning long vowel sounds: /a/ as in acorn, /e/ as in equal, /i/ as in icicle, /o/ as in overalls, and /u/ as in unicorn.  There will be NO Show and Tell.  **Word List 20 will be tested on Thursday or Friday, 4/10 or 4/11.
  • Wednesday, April 9th will be our class’ Wedding of Q and U.  Students will participate in a wedding ceremony joining the two letters.  Boys and girls are asked to dress like they are going to a wedding.  Cake and punch will be served at the reception following!  (Details were sent home on Thurs., 4/3)
  • For Reading we will begin Unit 5: Going Places.  Our first story will be Max Takes the Train by Rosemary Wells.  It is an animal fantasy story and we will be discussing realism and fantasy.  Watch for your Family Times newsletter!  New high frequency words, yellow, green, and blue will be added to the high frequency flashcards.  Please practice daily!
  • In Math we will finish Topic 10: Composing Numbers 11-19 and will begin Topic 11: Decomposing Numbers 11-19.  Review daily practice pages and continue to practice addition and subtraction!
  • Report cards were sent home on Friday, April 4th.  Parents are asked to sign and return the report cards and rubrics as soon as possible.  If there are any questions or concerns and/or a conference is requested, then please contact the teacher.
·       Students in Grades 3-6 will be finishing the PSSA tests on Monday, April 7thKindergarten’s schedule that day will be 9-9:40- Computers, lunch -11:40-12:10, snack- 1:45-2:00, and recess -2:00-2:30.   **Due to 5th Grades Writing portion of the PSSA tests, Kindergarten will switch special classes’ time with 5th grade Tuesday, 4/8 through Friday, 4/11.  Our schedule will be 10:20-11:00-special classes, 12:15-12:45 –lunch, and recess 2:00-2:30.  Snack will most likely be around 10:00.  Please talk to your child about being quiet while in the hallways during testing days!!  The regular schedule WILL resume on Monday, 4/14.

  • Kindergarten Physicals will be held on Thursday, April 10th for any children who received a PURPLE note last month from the school nurse.  **If you did not receive a note then a physical is NOT needed at this time.
  • Anyone who ordered from the Gertrude Hawk Fundraiser, the orders will be available for pick up in the school gymnasium from 4:00-7:00 PM on Friday, April 11th.
**Best Wishes to Marisa Seritsky and Phoebe Smith!  We celebrated Marisa’s 6th birthday on Friday, April 4th and will celebrate Phoebe’s on Monday, April 7th.  Happy birthday girls!!! 

Monday, April 7th is Day 1—Computer class.  Students will need library books for exchange on Wednesday, April 9th and sneakers and gym attire on Friday, April 11th!
