For Reading we will begin the next story in Unit 5 Messenger, Messenger by Robert Burleigh.  It is a rhyming story and we will be talking about transportation jobs.  The comprehension skill we will focus on with this story is compare and contrast and we will work with the short vowel sound /u/.  A new Family Times newsletter will be sent home on Monday.  Take time to practice sight word flashcards!!!
In Math, we will be finishing Topic 11, Decomposing Numbers 11-19 Please review daily practice pages!

Scholastic book orders for this month are due on Tuesday, April 22nd for anyone interested in ordering.  (**Our online code is GJXGV—it was not printed on the new order forms this month.)

Tuesday, April 22nd is Earth day.  Earth day is a day to remember to take care of our planet by keeping it clean.  We will be talking about the environment and discussing the important rule that tells us to “reduce, reuse, and recycle” and how following this rule can make a difference!  Perhaps as a family you could plan a special project in your neighborhood!

On Monday, April 21st students from the High School will visit NSE to present their Teens Against Tobacco program to each class.  Be sure to ask your child about their visit!!

On Thursday morning, April 24th Mrs. Hull will meet with the class for her guidance lesson.

On Friday, April 25th the Diversity Club students will be conducting lessons with all grade levels.  Kindergarten will meet with the students from 9:15-9:45.

Wednesday through Friday mornings this week (4/23-4/25) the Kindergarten teachers will be taking turns visiting the Child Development Center in Ft. Springs to meet the boys and girls who will be attending Kindergarten next year @ NSE and to help transition students to Kindergarten.  Substitute teachers will be covering the classes for the mornings.  Please remind your child to be on his/her best behavior.  Thank you!

The last round of DIBELS testing will begin in two weeks.  Students will be tested on many of the same skills as they were at the mid-year testing.  Review blending sounds to read nonsense words and break words apart into the individual sounds, or phonemes.

At the beginning of May the Reading teachers will test each child for an End-of-the-year Kindergarten test.  Children will need to write a dictated sentence or two, recognize, write and give the sound of every letter of the alphabet (both long and short vowels), be able to provide a word that begins with every letter of the alphabet (both long and short vowels), and be able to write as many words correctly in 10 minutes. (HINT:  word families provide lots of words.)  Please try at home to work on some of the areas to be tested to ensure that your child is fully prepared.

Our class participated in the “A Child’s View” writing for the Republican-Herald newspaper.  The entries and a class photo are to be published in a supplement on Thursday, April 24th.  Students answered the question “What do you want to be when you grow up and why?”  Be sure to check this out!!  **Students should be bringing home a FREE copy of the newspaper on 4/24.

Thank you to ALL who supported our class with the PTO Spring Fling Chinese Auction.  Our AWESOME “Night with the Family” basket earned our class a Pizza Party.  We had over 1,000 tickets in our bag!!!   Congrats to us!  The Pizza Party will be held on Friday, April 25th during lunch and boys and girls will eat in the classroom.  Students do not need a lunch or drink.

Monday, April 21st will be Day 5—GYM class on the special classes’ schedule. **Students will need sneakers and gym attire on Monday, April 21st, and library books for exchange on Thursday, April 24th.
