Week of March 3-7, 2014

Kindergarten News
*This week in Phonics we will be learning the consonant letter Vv as in vest and violin.  There will not be Show and Tell .  **Word List 15 will be tested on Thursday, February 6th or 7th.   Practice daily!   We are beginning something new with our word lists.  By this time in the kindergarten year, all the children should be blending successfully with little or no assistance.  Some of the children are memorizing the words on the world lists and not reading the words.  In order to test this accurately we will only be sending the odd numbered lists home with the children, and the even numbered lists will be used for the report card grades.  By doing this you can still see the type of words that the children will be expected to read.
*For Reading our next story will be “One Little Mouse!”  by Dori Chaconas.  It will be a rhyming/concept story and we will review the comprehension skill, sequence.  We will introduce consonant blends too.  Look for the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder.
*In Math we will be finishing up Subtraction, Topic 8.  Review vocabulary; take away, minus sign, differences, and subtract.
*Kindergarten registration for the 2014-2015 school year will be held next week.  Registration is open to all residents of the NS School District.  Please pass along this info. to anyone with children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall.  Appointments should be scheduled with the office.
*Toothbrush charts are due back by the end of next week.  Any student who returns his/her chart will receive a “dental health” treat from Mrs. Potts.  (Remember to continue to eat healthy foods, brush and floss your teeth, and visit a dentist at least once a year to keep your smile looking great!)
*Newspaper in Education Week is a program sponsored by the Pottsville Republican & Herald to promote interest in the newspaper in our schools.  It will be starting on Monday, March 3rd and continue through Friday, March 7th.  Check for Mrs. Potts’ ad in the classified section of the newspaper.  Ads can be sent to school during the week for treats.  The “I’m a Reader” forms, for those who participate, should be returned to the teacher the following week, with a parent’s signature and initial for each day of the week.  (Additional notes were sent home in your child’s folder.)
*Boys and girls enjoyed our celebration of Dr. Seuss this week.  Students from Bloomsburg University, Mrs. Selgrade’s 3rd grade class, Mr. Jones and Mrs. Ulceski, our principal and temporary assistant principal, visited our classroom Thursday and Friday 2/27 & 2/28.  Be sure to ask your child about the stories and activities our guests shared with the class.  Hats off to Dr. Seuss!!
