Week of March 10-14, 2014

Kindergarten News
**This week we will be learning about the consonant letter Jj and its sound as in jump and jar.  Instead of the usual Show & Tell we are asking that students tell a JOKE to the class rather than show a Jj item.  If you do not know a joke, you could do an Internet search for kids’ jokes and riddles, look for a joke book at the library or local bookstore, or check out the Mini page jokes in the newspaper.  Be prepared to laugh your way through the week!  **Word List 16 will be tested on Thurs. 3/13 or Friday 3/14.  (Remember the even numbered lists will not be sent home for practice.  This is to see how the boys and girls are doing all on their own!)

**For Reading we will continue Unit 4 with the classic traditional tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears as retold by Valeri Gorbachev.  We will review the comprehension skill, character and the letter sound /g/.  Watch for the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder.  Also don’t forget to practice your high frequency sight word flashcards!!

**In Math we will begin Topic 9, Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10.  Students will learn different ways to make 4 through 10 and write number sentences to show these different ways.

**Kindergarten registration for the 2014-2015 school year will be held one more day, Monday, March 10.  Registration is open to all residents of the NS School District.  Please pass along this information to anyone with children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall.  Appointments should be scheduled with the office.

**Scholastic book orders for March are due on or by Tuesday, March 18th for anyone interested in ordering!!  Orders can be given to the teacher or placed online at scholastic.com.  (Don’t forget about the Valentine’s Day coupon from Mrs. Potts—check the expiration date at the bottom, it may only be valid until the end of March!)

**Newspaper in Education Week is a program sponsored by the Pottsville Republican & Herald to promote interest in the newspaper in our schools.  It will be ending on Friday, March 7th.   Please look for Mrs. Potts ad in the Friday edition (3/7).  Ads can be turned in any day before next Friday (3/14) for a treat from the teacher.   The “I’m a Reader” forms, for those who participated, need to be returned to the teacher on Monday, March 10th with a parent’s signature and initial for each day of the week.  Forms received after Tuesday, March 11th will NOT have students name printed in the newspaper for participating, so please send in completed forms ASAP.

**Just a reminder for any student who received a “purple” form from the nurse this week it needs to be completed, signed, and returned to school.  Kindergarten physicals will be held on Thursday, April 10th

**The PTO Spring Fling Chinese Auction will be held in April.  Our class’ theme basket will be “A Night With the Family”.  So far Mrs. Potts has received; A Cake mix, popcorn and bags, and a puzzle.  Donations are due to the teacher by the week ending March 21st.    If a family would rather not shop for a donation, monetary donations will be accepted and Mrs. Potts will shop for items for the basket.  There is no value set and you can be creative!!  Please refer to the orange note sent home last week with suggestions and ideas!!

**Happy ½ birthday to Shakira Bolton.  We celebrated her July birthday on Friday, March 7th.  Best Wishes for her real summer birthday!

Monday, March 10th is Day 1 on the special classes’ schedule.  *Boys and girls will need library books for exchange on Wednesday, March 12th and sneakers and gym attire on Friday, March 14th!
