Week of February 3-7, 2014

Kindergarten News
In Phonics this week we will be learning the vowel letter Ee with its short sound as in elephant and egg and its long sound as in equal and eagle.  We will be focusing on the short vowel sound.  We will NOT have Show and Tell!  **Word List 12 will be tested on Thursday February 6th or Friday, February 7th.  Practice daily!!!
For Reading we will read the story, Hide Clyde.  It will be about a chameleon that changes so he can hide, or camouflage himself.  We will introduce the comprehension skill, main idea.  We will review the short /o/ sound in words and continue to work with the high frequency words; they, of, and you.   Be sure to practice sight word flashcards often and watch for the new Family Times news!
In Math we will finish up Topic 7; Addition.  Continue to practice joining sets and counting how many altogether.  Take some time to review daily practice pages!
Hip, Hip, Hooray! Our 100th day is just two school days away!!! Please practice counting from 0-100 and work on counting a collection of 100 items.  On Tuesday, February 4th students are asked to dress as if they were 100 years old!
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month.  Please encourage your child to brush his/her teeth at least twice a day and to practice good dental health habits.  **Look for the special “toothbrush chart” and dental health note enclosed in your child’s folder!  (Start coloring the chart on Sun., 2/2/14)
On Thursday, February 6th, a membership recruiter for the Girl Scouts will be coming to NSE to speak with the girls in grades K-3.  The presentation will be at 2:45 and last about 15 minutes.  The girls attending will receive a flyer to bring home and a small giveaway (bookmark).  If you do not want your child to attend, then please send a note to Mrs. Potts or tell your daughter not to attend.
The Valentine’s Day party will be held on Thursday, February 13th.  *We do not want anyone to feel left out so if you are writing out valentines, please make sure to have one for everyone in the class!  Valentines may be sent in the week of Feb. 10th.  (A class Valentine list (26 students) is enclosed in your child’s folder.)
Scholastic book orders for the month of February are due on Wednesday, February 19th for anyone interested in ordering.
Friday, January 31st was a sad day—it was Piper’s last day at NSE.  Piper is moving and will be attending a new school, starting Monday, February 3rd.  We will certainly miss her, and we wish her all the best with her new Kindergarten class!
Monday, February 3rd will be Day 3 and students will need library books for exchange.  Sneakers and gym attire will be needed for Wednesday, February 5th.
