Week of January 27-31, 2014

Kindergarten News

• This week in Phonics we will finish work with the letter Zz and will be learning the letter Cc with a /k/ sound as in cat and candy.  We will learn the K & C Spelling Rule.  The rule is that we spell the /k/ sound with the letter k when the sound is followed by the letters e, i, and y.   We spell the /k/ sound with the letter c when the sound is followed by the letters a, o, u, and any consonant.  For example:                        K before e, i, or y               C before a, o, u, or any consonant

            keg            kid            milky                      cat               cot               cup               clip

**There will be NO Show & Tell with this letter.

**Word List 10 will be tested on Friday, January 31^st.  Practice daily!

• For Reading we will continue with Unit 3 with the story Seeds by Ken Robbins.  It is an informational text about how plants grow and change.  We will practice the comprehension skill:  draw conclusions and will review the /o/ sound in words. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter! 

• In Math we will be working on Topic 7: Addition.  We will be joining sets and counting how many in all.  Review daily practice pages.  Sign and return Topic 6 test and review as needed.

• Tuesday, February 4^th is our tentative 100^th day of school!  We will be planning a celebration.  Practice counting from 0-100 and watch this week for a 100^th day newsletter with more information about our celebration.

• Congratulations to all students who successfully completed their United States’ reports!  It was a fun and educational way to learn about some of the Nifty Fifty United States.  **Thank you to all the parents who helped “prepare” the children for their first oral report.  (Our next oral report will be with the letter Dd for dinosaur!!) 

• Report cards will be sent home on Monday, January 27^th  (instead of Friday, January 24^th—due to the snow day last week.)  The third marking period began on Wednesday, 1/22.  Can you believe that we are half way through Kindergarten already!!!  (Language Arts and Math rubrics will be enclosed with your child’s report card.  Please take some time to review the rubrics and report card and SIGN & RETURN ALL in the envelope provided.)  **Take note that skills/standards that were not yet assessed are marked with XX instead of NA as noted on the report card scale.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Potts.  **Report cards will be returned to you to keep, after Mrs. Potts receives them signed. 

• Just a reminder:  NSE is hosting Jump Rope For Heart on Wednesday, February 12^th.  The last day to turn in donations/envelopes will be Friday, February 21^st.

•  The Valentine’s Day party will be held on Thursday, February 13^th, from 1:30-3:00.  A pink Valentine’s List of our class will be sent home this week to help you prepare valentines for the party. 

Best Wishes to Alli Kempsey who celebrated her 6^th birthday last week on Thursday, January 23^rd! 

Monday, January 27^th is Day 3 on the special classes’ schedule.  Students will need library books for book exchange on Monday, and will need sneakers and gym attire on Wednesday, January 29^th.  **Please note, students will be painting in Art class on Tuesday, January 28^th, so please no new clothing.
