Week of November 18-22, 2013

Kindergarten News 
JUST A REMINDER…. There will be NO SCHOOL for students on Monday, Nov. 18th due to a scheduled ACT 80 day for Parent/Teacher Conferences. Confirmation notes were sent home last week.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Potts.   apotts@northschuylkill.net or 874-3661, Ext. 3245.  Please be prompt!!!

**This week in Phonics we will be learning the letter Ss as in sun and snake.  Please review sounds and writing of all letters learned so far (Ll, Oo, Gg, Hh, Tt, Pp, Aa, Nn, Mm, and Ii)There will be show and tell for letter Ss, so please follow the schedule.  **Practice Word List #4—test will be Friday, Nov. 22nd(If your child was tested on Word List #3, then please sign and return.)

**In Reading we will read the story A Bed for the Winter by Karen Wallace.  It will be an informational text.  We will discuss Fiction and Non-Fiction, winter homes, and work on the comprehension skill, sequence.  We will be working on the short /i/ sound.  Watch for the new Family Times and Phonics Reader to be sent home.  Continue to practice the high frequency words; I, am, a, the, to, is, have, little, my, like, we, he, and for.

**In Math we will be finishing up Topic 4:  Comparing and Ordering Numbers 0-10.  Students should be practicing writing numbers from 0-10 correctly and continue counting by 1’s to 100.  Take some time at home to review the daily practice pages completed at school.

**We will begin preparing for “Thanksgiving”.  During the next two weeks students will learn about the first Thanksgiving, will make pilgrim and Native American costumes, and will begin to learn a poem or song for the holiday.  We will make a Thanksgiving bracelet and will also discuss being “thankful”.  The students will even get to use a Native American name for a day!

**The NS high school student council sponsors the Feed-A-Friend program in our school district as its fall service project.  The Student Council will be collecting non-perishable food items and cash donations to help our less fortunate neighbors enjoy a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.  The project began on Thursday, Nov. 7th and will end on November 21st.  Collection boxes @ NSE will be located in the lobby and monetary donations can be given to the secretaries in the office.  (Please make checks payable to “The Salvation Army” and note in the memo line “Feed-A-Friend”.    Monetary donations are used to purchase perishable items like turkeys, bread, milk, butter, etc…)

**FYI:  Anyone who ordered from the PTO Fall Book Fundraiser is to pick up his/her order(s) in the NSE gymnasium on Monday, November 25th from 4:00-7:00 PM. 

**The NSE school and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Schuylkill Co. are teaming up to raise funds for the Big Brothers Big Sisters School-Based mentoring program.  Monday, Nov. 18th will be the kick-off for the Bowl For Kids Sake Event.  Pledge envelopes were sent home earlier this week and will be due back to school by Friday, December 6th**Students will also receive fundraising packets.  Students are encouraged but not obligated to participate in the fundraising activity.  Students will bowl during their gym classes until all students have had an opportunity to “Bowl for Kids Sake”.

**Tuesday, November 19th will be Day 2 on the special classes’ schedule.  We will have Music class.  Wednesday, November 20th will be library so don’t forget library books for exchangeStudents will be painting in Art class on Thursday, November 21st, so please dress appropriately (NO NEW CLOTHES) and/or plan to bring & wear a “painting” shirt!  Boys and Girls will need sneakers and gym attire on Friday, November 22nd for Day 5-gym class.
