Week of October 7-11, 2013

Kindergarten News

This week we will continue working with the consonant letter Pp and will take some time to review the 6 letters learned so far this school year (Ll, Oo, Gg, Hh, Tt, and Pp).   We will NOT have Show & Tell.  Our pajama party will be held next week on Wednesday, October 16th.  More details will be sent home in our next newsletter!  **Please watch for your child’s container of letter tiles to come home on Thursday, Oct. 10th for practice at home, and be sure to return them to school the next school day!!!
We have finished the story Julius and will begin the story Dig, Dig, Digging in Reading.  We will be talking about how machines help people.  We will be practicing the sound /t/ and the skill classifying and categorizing.  Watch for the new Family Times newsletter and continue to review the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to, and a when your read together.
For Math we will begin Topic 3:  Six to Ten.  Students will learn how to read, write, and count numbers from 6-10.  They will learn how to show 6 and other numbers in different ways.  Be sure to review the daily practice pages that your child brings home in his/her folder!
October 6-12 is Fire Prevention Week so please take some time at home to discuss fire safety with your child and family.  FYI:  There will be a Fire Prevention Program at the Wilburton Hose Co. on Wednesday, October 9th @ 7:00 pm.  All ages are welcome to attend!
October Scholastic book orders will be due on Tuesday, October 8th for anyone interested in ordering this month.
We are beginning our writing program called Kid Writing.  Several times a week we will break into “centers” and students will work in small groups working on different activities while the teacher helps students write and illustrate their own stories.  When our Kid Writing “books” are filled they will be sent home for you to keep.  Hopefully we will have a couple of samples for viewing at Parent Conferences on Monday, November 18th.
Anyone who has not yet turned in FALL FESTIVAL MONEY --$4; is asked to try and send it in as soon as possible.  The parents who are planning the FALL FESTIVAL will need to shop for supplies and goodies.  The last Fall Festival planning meeting will be held on Sunday, October 13th @ 5:30 at the Mineshaft in Ashland**Our Fall Festival will be held on Thursday, October 17th.
The PTO store will SOON be opening and when it does, Kindergarten students will be able to shop on a MONDAY from 8:30-8:45.  Students are asked to shop ONLY at this time.  Please do not put school store money in your child’s folder.  (Teachers will NOT see it until after the store closes.)  **Students should keep it separate in book bags where THEY can reach it easily for shopping BEFORE homeroom.
Mrs. Hull, our guidance counselor, will visit with our class on Thursday, October 10th for a monthly guidance lesson.  Be sure to ask your child about her visit!!!  She most likely will be talking about Red Ribbon Week, which will be coming up the week of October 20th!
Just a reminder:  The deadline for donations for The Children’s Book Drive is Monday, October 7th.  All donations should be suitable for children up to 12 years old.  Books should be deposited in the boxes at the entrance to the cafeteria.  Only books in good condition will be accepted.  Thank you for your help!!

Monday, October 7th will be Day 4— Art, and students will be painting, so please do not send your child to school in NEW clothes. Mrs. Zink suggests that you send an old shirt to school to be used as a painting smock. It will be kept in school all year to use in art class. **Students will need gym attire and sneakers on Wednesday, Oct. 9th and please remember to pack Library books for exchange on Friday, October 11th!
