Week of September 9-13, 2013

~We have finished our second week of school and the students are adjusting very well!   We also learned to recognize and write the letters “L & O” this week.  The students liked showing their “L” items from home for show-and-tell. The boys and girls had a fun time at the little luau and loved the Limbo!  Many enjoyed tasting a fresh cut pineapple too.

~We have started using the behavior calendar at the back of your child’s communication folder.  Check the calendar daily to see what “kind” of day your child had at school.  (An explanation of the calendar was sent in the Keep side of the folder on Tuesday.)

~Our Phonics letter for this week will be “Gg” as in goat. The show-and-tell schedule for the letter “Gg” will be the same as this past week, so be sure to check which day your child is to share!  New “brown bags” are in your child’s folder.

~On Monday, we will begin our 2nd Reading story, Fix It Duck. We will work on recognizing the letters Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm. and Nn. Watch for your Family Times newsletter and take home story—Am I? to come home in your child’s folder.  Continue to read at home, talk about story characters and setting, and read the high frequency words I and am.

~In Math we will continue to work with Topic 1: One to Five. Boys and Girls have been practicing counting up to 5 objects and learning to write the numbers 1-5 correctly.  Students should practice writing the numbers from 0-9 while singing the number writing verses sent home in their folders.

~Students will have HOMEWORK most Monday through Thursday nights.  Check the RETURN side of your child’s folder for homework assignments and be sure to check what we’ve been working on at school.  Remind your child to RETURN the completed work to school the next school day.  Not only does homework reinforce what we are working on at school, but also it teaches your child responsibility.  Thank you for your support!!!

~PLEASE TAKE NOTE:  Kindergarten changed its LUNCH time starting Friday, September 6th to 12:15-12:45 due to the crowded lunchroom at 1:10-1:40.  It was difficult for Kindergarten students to get through the crowded lunchroom and the noise level was too loud for students to hear dismissal directions.  With the change Kindergarten should be the only class in the lunchroom for most of the lunch period.  Hopefully this will be better for all!

~Each Wednesday our class will meet with their 4th grade Reading Buddies from Mrs. Reinoehl’s homeroom.  Boys and girls have been matched up with 4th graders to listen to stories and eventually practice their own reading skills.  Be sure to ask your child about his/her buddy.

~The School-wide Book Fair will take place in the Library starting Monday, September 9th.  All students will browse/shop during their scheduled Library class.    **Parents will be able to shop with their child on Monday night from 4-7:00 p.m. if interested.  (**Please note that the Book Fair is separate from the Scholastic Book Club order Mrs. Potts has due on Tuesday, September 10th)

~ There will be a PTO meeting on Monday, Sept. 9th in the cafeteria beginning at 6:30.  All are invited and encouraged to attend.

~Some students had questions about being allowed to have peanut butter in their packed lunches from home.  Even though we have a noted NUT allergy for SNACKS, students CAN still bring peanut butter in their lunches.  It is only a problem with class snacks that will be shared.

~We have begun our snack rotation.  Snack notices will come home in your child’s folder as your scheduled day approaches.

Monday, Sept. 9th will be Day 4, Art; Tuesday, Sept. 10th will be Day 5, Gym—NEED gym attire and sneakers; Wednesday, Sept. 11th will be Computer Class; Thursday, Sept. 12th will be Music; and Friday, Sept. 13th will be Library Book Exchange and also our in-school Book Fair shopping time.

Thank you for all of your cooperation!!!
