Week of September 23-27, 2013

Kindergarten News
This week in Phonics, we will be learning Tt as in tent, tail, and tie.  Take some time to find items at home that begin with the letter Tt sound for Show and Tell!  Also, boys and girls are asked to learn their telephone numbers.  Please practice at home!

We will be starting our 4th story for Reading, Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten.  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home on Monday.  We will be talking about People in Communities and will be learning how to classify and categorize.   Continue to read at home and practice the high frequency words; I, am, the, name, and little; practice rhyming and counting syllables in words and identifying the letters from Aa-Zz.

For Math we will be reading and writing 0, comparing numbers, ordering numbers 0-5, and learning ordinal numbers first through fifth.  Be sure to review daily practice pages and continue to review number writing for numbers 0-9.  Review the words/concepts more, fewer, and same as.

Our theme for the week will be APPLESStudents are asked to bring in an apple on Monday, September 23rd.  The apple can be any size, color, or kind.  Each day of the week we will use the apples for sorting, graphing, and/or tasting!  We will also celebrate Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on Thursday, September 26th.  It should be a sweet week!!!

Hearing screens are scheduled for Tuesday, September 24th.  Kindergarten should be tested from 10:00-11:00 am.  Discuss with your child the importance of being quiet while the testers are working with each student!

We have begun practicing writing our first names.  Please watch your child as he/she is writing.  Be sure to check if letters are beginning at the top, not the bottom and also guide him/her to use the lines when forming letters.  Capital letters should only be used at the beginning of names!

Our Kindergarten class has begun a science unit called Trees.  We will be observing and comparing trees in and around the school.  We have adopted a maple tree as our “class tree” to watch throughout the seasons.  We’ve been learning about the tree parts; roots, trunk, branches, and leaves.  **Your child may come home with lots of information and questions about trees and tree parts.  You can join in the tree study by taking your child for walks in your neighborhood to observe trees and to compare how they are alike and how they are different.  See which trees lose their leaves in the fall and which keep them all year?  Look closely at the leaves.  Do the trees have buds, flowers, fruit, or seeds?  You might notice things about trees that you never thought about before!!!

With Fall and the cooler weather upon us, please be sure your child has the proper clothing for a ½ hour outside recess.  Kindergarten tries to get out for “fresh air” and time to run around whenever the weather allows.  Temperatures can vary from morning to afternoon and sometimes the shady areas of the playground are chilly.  Better to be prepared with a jacket/sweater/sweatshirt than be underdressed.  Also, please have your child practice zippering and/or buttoning his/her coat and “pulling” the sleeves right-side out before attempting to put it on.  Thank you!!!

New October Scholastic book order forms will be sent home early next week.  Orders will be due by Tuesday, October 8th for anyone interested.  (Remember orders can be done online or sent to school w/ a check made payable to Scholastic Book Clubs.)

**Please help your child practice/learn his/her 4-digit computer number. This will help him/her log into the computer quickly and give him/her more time to work when using computers at school.  (We can also stop wearing our name badges to lunch and library once all students know their ID number for the cooks and librarians!)

We will be saying good-bye to Luca on Friday, September 20th.  He and his family will be moving to another school district.  But we welcomed a new student named Kaiden on Thursday.  (Starting on Monday, we will still have 26 students; 13 boys and 13 girls.  **An updated class list will be sent home on Monday.)

**The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held at the school on Thursday, October 17th.  Parent and grandparent volunteers who have the necessary clearances are welcome and needed to help with this fun-filled day!

**Monday, September 23rd will be Day 4 on our special classes’ schedule.  **Students will need sneakers and gym attire on Tuesday, Sept. 24thfor gym class!

Hope you had a great Fall weekend!
