Week of April 29-May 3, 2013

Kindergarten News

~  This week in Phonics we will continue w/ the two sounds of digraph oo as in the words hook and tooth and learn the long vowel rule for a vowel consonant silent e pattern as in the words hose and kite.  We refer to the silent e as a “sneaky e” which makes the vowel say its name.  Please review digraphs ck, sh, and voiced and unvoiced th.  We will not have Show and Tell.  **Word List 25 will be tested on Friday, May 3^rd.  Practice daily!!

~  For Reading we will start a new story titled, Building Beavers.   It is an informational text about beavers.  We will focus on the comprehension skill, main idea, and we will work with the short /e/ letter sound.  Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

~  In Math we will be Comparing Heights and Lengths of objects, Sharing a Whole by separating it into 2 equal parts, Using objects to represent numbers to 20 and numbers to represent a set of objects, Measuring length using inches, and Identifying halves and fourths.  We will continue to write numbers 11-30 correctly, tell time to the hour, add dots on dominoes, and draw pictures for addition and subtraction story problems.  Please review daily practice pages!

~  DIBELS testing will be held for Kindergarten on April 29^th and May 2^nd.  **This will be the last time for this school year.   Be sure your child eats a good breakfast and is well rested!

~  On Wednesday, May 1^st Mrs. Hull will visit the classroom for her monthly guidance lesson.  Be sure to ask your child what he/she learned!

~  The last Scholastic Book Order forms will be sent home early next week. Take note of the due date as it will be a shorter time frame to ensure delivery before school ends.

~  As part of the Relay Recess, there will be a Friendly’s Family Fun Night on Tuesday, April 30^th from 5-8 PM @ the Fairlane Village Mall.  All dine-in and carry out sales are included.  Basket auction chances will be available too. (REMINDER: **NSE Relay Recess T-shirt orders for those interested are due by May 3^rd.)

~  A Pink field trip permission slip, an orange field trip form, and white lunch order form are being sent home in your child’s folder attached to a green information sheet about the Kindergarten field trip to the circus in Hershey on Thursday, May 23^rd.  Please complete, sign, and return the pink permission form w/ emergency contact information, the orange field trip form, and the white lunch form AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

**Approved chaperones will need to send in $15 each for the cost of the circus ticket. (checks made payable to NSE PTO)  Also if a chaperone would like to order a school lunch for the field trip, then please add that information to your child’s white lunch order form.  Chaperones will need to be at the school around 8:30.  Buses will depart the school at 8:45.

Congratulations to Lorelai and Trinity Davies for being recognized as Kindergarten students of the Month at the April School Board Meeting on Wednesday, April 24^th.  Each donated 12 inches of their hair to the Locks of Love organization!  Way to go girls!!!

Happy Birthday to Joey Campbell!  We will celebrate his 6^th birthday on Monday, April 29^th.

Monday, April 29^th is Day 2 and students need gym attire and sneakers. 

Wednesday is Library class; so do not forget library books for exchange!
