Week of March 4-8, 2013

                                                      Kindergarten News
 This week we will be learning the letter Xx as in fox and x-ray.  Students will go on a treasure hunt throughout the building to find the “X” that marks the spot of their hidden treasure!  How exciting!!!  There will be NO Show and Tell.  **Word List 17 test will be Monday, March 4th and Word List 18 test will be Monday, March 11th.   Please practice daily!

            In Reading we will begin Unit 5: Going Places.  Our first story will be Max Takes the Train by Rosemary Wells.  It is an animal fantasy story and we will be discussing realism and fantasy.

            For Math we will make ABBC patterns, divide by sharing, compare numbers through 10 using playing cards, identify right and left, and explore tangrams.  Boys and girls should practice writing numbers 1-20 correctly and continue to practice counting by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s.  Take some time each day to review practice worksheets!!!

            Newspaper in Education Week will begin on Monday, March 4th and end on Friday, March 8th.  Check for Mrs. Potts’ ad in the classified section of the Republican and Herald newspaper.  Ads can be sent to school during the week for treats.  The “I’m a Reader” forms, for those who participated, should be returned to the teacher the following week (March 11-15) with a parent’s signature and initial for each day of the week.

            Kindergarten registration for the 2013-2014 school year, will be held during this week, March 4-8.  Registration is open to all residents of the NS School District.  Please pass along this information to anyone with children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall.  Appointments should be scheduled with the office.
           
            Starting sometime next week and/or the following week we will begin testing for the 3rd marking period.  Please help your child by reviewing all the letters and sounds learned in phonics, blending sounds to read words, practice high frequency words and sight words, practice rhyming words, practice counting to 100, identifying numbers 0-30, identify coins; penny, nickel, dime, and quarter, and know each coin’s value, and tell time to the hour.
           
            Scholastic book orders for March are due on or by Wednesday, March 13th for anyone interested in ordering!  Orders can be given to the teacher or placed online at scholastic.com.

            Boys and girls really enjoyed our celebration of Dr. Seuss this week.  Students from Bloomsburg University and Mrs. Selgrade’s third grade class will visit our classroom Thursday and Friday.  Be sure to ask your child about the stories and activities our guests shared with the class.  .  Hats off to Dr. Seuss!  If you would like to follow up with more fun with Dr. Seuss go to www.seusville.com .

            Toothbrush charts are due back by Wednesday (March 6th) of this week.  Any student who returns his/her chart before Wednesday will receive a “dental health” treat from Mrs. Potts.   Remember to continue to eat healthy foods, brush and floss your teeth, and visit a dentist every 6 months to keep your smile looking great!

FYI:  Mrs. Potts will be attending the Conference for Pennsylvania Kindergarten Teachers in Harrisburg on Thursday, March 7th and Friday, March 8th.  Mrs. Nancy Souchack will be the substitute teacher for both days.  If you need to reach Mrs. Potts then you can email @ northschuylkill.net, but please send a note in your child’s folder for any daily needs or concerns or leave a voice message at 874-3661, Ext. 245 for the substitute teacher to see and/or hear. **Talk to your child about his/her behavior and remind him/her that the same rules apply for the substitute as do for Mrs. Potts and he/she should be on his/her best behavior. 

                        Monday (3/4/13) will be DAY 5 on the special classes’ schedule.  **Boys and girls will need sneakers and gym attire on Wednesday, March 6th – DAY 2, and library books for exchange on Friday, March 8th- DAY 4.
