Week of January 21-25, 2013

Kindergarten News

• This week we will be learning the letter Cc with a /k/ sound as in cat and candy.  We will learn the K & C Spelling Rule.  The rule is that we spell the /k/ sound with the letter k when the sound is followed by the letters e, i, and y.   We spell the /k/ sound with the letter c when the sound is followed by the letters a, o, u, and any consonant.  For example:

                        K before e, i, or y                                    C before a, o, u, or any consonant

            keg            kid            milky                                       cat               cot               cup                        clip

--We will have letter Cc Show and Tell so start looking for your Cc item to share with the class!

**Word List 12 will be tested on Friday, January 25^th.  Practice daily!

• For Reading we will begin Unit 4 with the story Bunny Day by Rick Walton.  It will be about what adventures take place in Bunny’s day from breakfast to bedtime.  The focus skill of this story is sequence.   Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

• In Math we will be working on identifying a 1 cup measuring cup and following a recipe, identifying full, half full, and empty containers, and identifying a quart container.  We will practice covering a design in more than one way using pattern blocks and will work on some problem solving by Acting it out and Drawing a picture!  Review the daily practice sheets at home with your child.

• Thursday, January 31^st is our tentative 100^th day of school!  We will be planning a celebration.  Practice counting from 0-100 and watch next week for a 100^th day newsletter with more information about our celebration. 

• United States’ reports were sent back home.  The boys and girls did an UNBELIEVABLY good job with their presentations to the class.  Thanks to all the parents for their help and preparation.

• Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, January 23^rd.  The third marking period began on Friday, January 18^th.  Can you believe that we are half way through Kindergarten already!!!

• “Jump Rope for Heart” information sheets and collection envelope have been sent home in your child’s folder.  Please read over the packet and complete as needed.  The NSE Jump Rope for Heart event will be held on Wednesday, February 13^th.  Mrs. Hull our guidance teacher will be talking to the students about the event on Friday, January 25^th at our next guidance lesson.  Be sure to discuss this program more with your child and help them be heart healthy and feel good!

Monday, January 21^st is Day 4 on the special classes’ schedule.  Students will need library books for book exchange on Monday, and will need sneakers and gym attire on Thursday, January 24^th.
