Week of November 12-16, 2012


Kindergarten News 

**This week in Phonics we will be finishing the vowel letter Ii and its short sound as in igloo and inch and its long sound as in ice and beginning the letter Ss as in sun and snake.  Please review sounds and writing of all letters learned so far (Ll, Oo, Gg, Hh, Tt, Pp, Aa, Nn, Mm, and Ii).  There will be show and tell for letter Ss, so please follow the schedule.  **Practice Word List #4—test will be Friday, Nov. 16th.  (If your child was tested on Word List #3, then please sign and return.  If your child was not yet tested on Word List #3, then please practice for Monday, Nov. 12th )

**In Reading we will read the story A Bed for the Winter by Karen Wallace.  It will be an informational text.  We will discuss Fiction and Non-Fiction, winter homes, and work on the comprehension skill, sequence.  We will be working on the short /i/ sound.  Watch for the new Family Times and Phonics Reader to be sent home.  Continue to practice the high frequency words; I, am, a, the, to, is, have, little, my, like, we, of, you.

**In Math we will be identifying time to the hour, identifying the numbers 0-10, identifying before, after, and between, learning to write money amounts to 10 cents, and identify an object that doesn’t belong to a group (size, shape, or color).  Practice counting sets and identifying and writing numbers correctly.  Take some time to review the daily practice pages.

**We will begin preparing for “Thanksgiving”.  During the next two weeks students will learn about the first Thanksgiving, will make pilgrim and Native American costumes, and will begin to learn a poem or song for the holiday.  We will make some turkeys and will also discuss being “thankful”.  The students will even get to use a Native American name for a day!

**Ms. Clarissa Geary, Director of Education, Training and Volunteer Services, will be presenting a Personal Body Safety Program to the class on Wednesday, November 14th from 9:00-9:30.  This message encourages healthy decision-making and communication.  Should you wish to EXCLUDE your child from participating, then please indicate that on the orange permission slip that is enclosed in your child’s folder.

**The PTO is collecting recipes for a school cookbook (see 1/2 note sent home on Thurs., Nov. 7th).  If you could not read the online address for recipes it is: nseptorecipes@yahoo.com The photocopy was difficult to see.

**Thank you to all the parents who attended the parent/teacher conferences on Tuesday, November 6th and who spoke with Mrs. Potts via a phone conference.  Your interest and support in your child’s education is important to your child’s success!

**Monday, November 12th will be Day 5 on the special classes’ schedule.  We will have Music class.  Wednesday, November 14th will be gym so don’t forget sneakers and gym attire and students will need library books for Friday’s library class/book exchange.
