Week of September 10-14, 2012

Kindergarten Newsletter
~We have finished our second week of school and the students are adjusting very well!   We also learned to recognize and write the letters “L & O” this week.  The students liked showing their “L” items from home for show-and-tell. The boys and girls had a fun time at the little luau and loved the Limbo!  Many enjoyed tasting a fresh cut pineapple too. :)

**We have started using the behavior calendar at the back of your child’s communication folder.  Check the calendar daily to see what “kind” of day your child had at school.  (An explanation of the calendar was sent in the Keep side of the folder on Wednesday.)

~Our Phonics letter for this week will be “Gg” as in goat. The show-and-tell schedule for the letter “Gg” will be the same as this past week, so be sure to check which day your child is to share!  New “brown bags” are in your child’s folder.

~On Monday, we will begin our 3rd Reading story, Plaidypus Lost. We will be talking about how families cooperate, we will be learning to recognize the letters Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, and Ss, and we will practice the comprehension skill: sequence.  Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home in your child’s folder.  Continue to read at home, talk about story characters and setting, and recognize the letters from Aa-Nn, as well as the high frequency words I and am.

~In Math we will continue to work with counting bears, pattern blocks, and linking cubes.  We will also practice counting to 5 with 1:1 correspondence, creating an AB color pattern, identifying most and fewest on a graph, and using positional words and phrases: over, under, on top of, behind, in back of, in front of, beside, inside, and outside.  Students should practice writing the numbers from 0-9 while singing the number writing verses on their practice pages.  Our first math assessment will be identifying the 4 basic shapes; circle, square, triangle, and rectangle.  Take some time to review them at home.

~Each Wednesday our class will meet with their 4th grade Reading Buddies from Mrs. Reinoehl’s homeroom.  Boys and girls have been matched up with 4th graders to listen to stories and eventually practice their own reading skills.  Be sure to ask your child about his/her buddy.

~The School-wide Book Fair will take place in the Gym on Monday, September 10th.  All students will browse during the day on Monday.    **Parents will be able to shop with their child on Monday night from 4-7:00 p.m. if interested.  There will NOT be any in-school shopping.  (**Please note that the Book Fair is separate from the Firefly and SeeSaw order Mrs. Potts placed earlier this week.)

~ There will be a PTO meeting on Monday, Sept. 10th in the cafeteria beginning at 6:30.  All are invited and encouraged to attend.

ATTENTION:  Anyone interested in helping with the upcoming Kindergarten Fall Festival is invited to a meeting in the NSE cafeteria at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 12th**The meeting may run until the end of the school day.   The Fall Festival will be held on Thursday October 11th  If you are unable to make the meeting on 9/12/12, but want to help and/or participate at the Fall Festival, then please send a note to school with your contact information and it will be given to someone at the meeting. (Clearances are a must!)

Monday, Sept. 10th will be Day 5, Music.   **Students will need sneakers and gym attire for Wednesday, September 12th.
