Week of April 23-27, 2012

Kindergarten News   

            This week in Phonics we will finish with digraph ck as in duck and be learning the digraph sh as in shark and ship. There will be NO Show and Tell!  Word List 22 will be tested on either Thursday, April 26^th or Friday, April 27^th.  Please practice daily!!

            For Reading we will begin our last story in Unit 5 This is the Way We Go to School.  It is a fiction story about children around the world.  The comprehension skill we will focus on with this story is drawing conclusions and we will work with the letter sounds /y/ and /kw/ for the letters Yy and Qq.  A new Family Times newsletter will be sent home on Monday.

            In Math, we will be acting out and drawing “some, some more” stories and solving a problem by guessing and checking.  We will identify a cone and sort three-dimensional objects. (cone, cylinder, cube, and sphere)  Students will continue to practice counting from 0-20 and identifying numbers 11-30, and we will be identifying the time of day as day or night, and morning, afternoon, or evening.  We will be counting by 2’s and learning about even and odd numbers, as well as acting out story problems for subtraction.  Please review daily practice pages!

            Our class has participated in the “A Child’s View” writing for the Republican-Herald newspaper.  The entries and class photo are to be published in a supplement on Thursday, April 26^th.  Students answered the question “What do you want to be when you grow up and why?”  Be sure to check this out!!!

            Scholastic book orders for the month are due on Tuesday, April 24^th for anyone interested in ordering.

            Sunday, April 22^nd is Earth day.  Earth day is a day to remember to take care of our planet by keeping it clean.  We will be talking about the environment to prepare for this special day.  We will discuss the important rule that tells us to “reduce, reuse, and recycle” and how following this rule can make a difference!  Perhaps as a family you could plan a special project in your neighborhood!

Monday, April 23^rd will be Day 1 on the special classes’ schedule. **Students will need sneakers and gym attire on Tuesday, April 24^th and library books on Thursday, April 26^th.
