Week of April 16-20, 2012

Kindergarten News

· This week in Phonics we will be learning long vowel sounds: /a/ as in acorn; /e/ as in equal; /i/ as in icicle; /o/ as in overalls; and /u/ as in unicorn and also learn the digraph ck as in duck. There will be NO Show & Tell. **Word List 21 test will be Thursday, April 19th or Friday, April 20th. Please practice daily!

· For Reading we will start a new story titled, On the Move! It is an informational text by author Donna Latham. We will work with the letter sounds /v/ and /z/ and the comprehension skill, main idea. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter and have your child practice the Words to Read!

· In Math we will continue to use tangrams and explore slides, turns, and flips. We will work on identifying largest and smallest shapes and cover half of a shape, will practice paying for items using pennies, nickels, dimes, or a quarter, and will identify doubles and matching sets. Take some time to review the daily practice worksheets!!

· DIBELS testing will be held for Kindergarten on April 18th and 19th. **This will be the last time for this school year.

· Monday through Wednesday mornings this week the Kindergarten teachers will be taking turns visiting the Child Development Center in Ft. Springs to meet the boys and girls who will be attending Kindergarten next year at NSE and to help transition students to Kindergarten. Substitute teachers will be covering the classes for the mornings. Please remind your child to be on his/her best behavior. Thank You!

· Scholastic book orders for the month of April are due by Tuesday, April 24th for anyone interested in ordering this month.

· FYI: Names of the participants of the Read-at-Home Challenge (I’m a Reader! Contracts) from Newspaper in Education Week were printed in the Monday, April 9th edition of the Republican & Herald newspaper.

· Even though spring has arrived, we do have several weeks of school remaining. Students need to try and stay focused on their schoolwork and to continue to do their best.

Thank you to all the homeroom helpers who helped with the Easter party and egg hunt. It was fun and Egg-citing!!!

Monday will be Day 1 on the special classes’ schedule. Boys and girls will need gym attire and sneakers on Tuesday, April 17th and library books for exchange on Thursday, April 19h.
