
Kindergarten News
This week we will be working on the letter Ww and its sound as in wagon and watermelon. Review identifying and writing letters learned. Also practice blending letters in three, four, and five letter words. We will have Show & Tell so please follow the schedule. **Word List 18 will be tested on Thursday, March 22 nd or Friday, March 23rd. Practice daily!
To go along with our letter Ww, we will have Wacky Hair Day on Friday, March 23rd. Start thinking about a wacky hairstyle for the day. Remember boys and girls with short hair can always wear WIGS—they are wacky too!!!
Wednesday, March 21st will be WATERY WEDNESDAY. We will be talking about water and completing different experiments involving water throughout the day. It will be WONDERFUL!
As a theme for the week we will be discussing different kinds of weather. Maybe we will even have a future meteorologist in our midst!
For Reading we will read the story, Mayday! Mayday! by author Chris L. Demarest. It is an informational text and we will be talking about emergency transportation. We will practice the comprehension skill cause and effect and review the letter Xx and its sound /ks/. Please practice the new high frequency words blue, yellow and green.
In Math we will be working with sorting and identifying tangram pieces, covering designs using tangrams, and identifying small, medium, and large shapes. We will measure length & width using nonstandard units, graph a picture on a pictograph, explore slides, turns, and flips, and count forward and backward on a number line. Be sure to review daily practice pages at home!
Our Kindergarten class has begun a study of wood and paper for Science. We have been looking at the properties of wood and paper and have been writing in a Science notebook about what we have observed so far. Take some time to discuss with your child what he or she has learned!
Anyone interested in participating in the “Imagine”, What would you like to be when you grow up drawing contest for The National Children’s Study needs to have his/her entry returned to Mrs. Potts by Tuesday, March 27th. A representative from the Nat’l Children’s Study will be picking them up at the school on Wednesday, March 28th. (Information about this and the entry forms were sent home in your child’s folder a week or two ago.)
The 4th marking period will begin on Thursday, March 22nd. Report cards are scheduled to be sent home on Friday, March 23rd. Parents are asked to sign and return the report cards as soon as possible. If there are any questions or concerns and/or a conference is requested, then please contact the teacher.
Kindergarten graduation pictures will be taken in the morning Friday, March 30th. Envelopes were sent home with portrait package information (The information is also posted on Mrs. Potts’ Homework Helpline as a post). If interested in purchasing pictures then please return the money by Thursday, March 29th. **Each child will be photographed as part of a class photo even if a package is not purchased, so please plan on your child wearing a WHITE COLLARED SHIRT and girls, no hairstyles on top of your heads because you will be wearing graduation caps and gowns!
Just a reminder: Kindergarten physicals will be held on Thursday, March 29th.
Monday, March 19th is Day 1—Art Class. Be sure to wear sneakers and gym attire on Tuesday, March 20th. Library books will be needed on Thursday, March 22nd.
