Week of March 12-16, 2012

Kindergarten News

This week we will be learning the letter Xx as in fox and x-ray. Students will go on a treasure hunt throughout the building to find the “X” that marks the spot of their hidden treasure! How exciting!!! There will be NO Show and Tell. **Word List 17 test will be Thursday, March 15^th or Friday, March 16^th. Please practice daily!

In Reading we will begin Unit 5: Going Places. Our first story will be Max Takes the Train by Rosemary Wells. It is an animal fantasy story and we will be discussing realism and fantasy.

For Math we will make ABBC patterns, divide by sharing, compare numbers through 10 using playing cards, identify right and left, and explore tangrams. Boys and girls should practice writing numbers 1-20 correctly and continue to practice counting by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s. Take some time each day to review practice worksheets!!!

On Friday, March 16^th we will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day—Don’t forget to wear something green. It could be your lucky day!!!

This week we will continue testing for the 3^rd marking period. Please help your child prepare by reviewing all the letters and sounds learned in phonics, blending sounds to read words, practice high frequency words and sight words, practice rhyming words, practice counting to 100, identifying numbers 0-30, identifying coins; penny, nickel, and dime, and know each coin’s value, and tell time to the hour.

Students in grades 3-6 will be taking the PSSA tests March 12-16, so please remind your child to be extra quiet when walking through the hallways each day.

Newspaper in Education Week ends on Friday, March 9^th and The yellow “I’m a Reader” forms, for those who participated, should be returned to the teacher by Tuesday, March 13^th with a parent’s signature and initial for each day of the week. **(Forms returned after Tuesday will not have name printed in the newspaper for participating, so please send in completed forms by the 13^th)

FYI: Kindergarten Graduation pictures will be taken in the morning on Friday, March 30^th. Envelopes are being sent home with portrait package information. If interested in purchasing pictures then please return the money before or on the day of pictures. **Each child will be photographed as part of a class photo even if a package is not purchased, so please plan on your child wearing a WHITE COLLARED SHIRT and girls, no hairstyles on top of your heads because you will be wearing graduation caps and gowns! (Mark your calendars; Kindergarten Graduation will be held on Tuesday, May 22^nd in the evening at the High School Auditorium. Details will be sent home at a much later date.)

Our Kindergarten Field Trip has been scheduled!!! We will be going to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at the Giant Center in Hershey on Thursday, May 24^th. It is the All New Blue Tour, DRAGONS. Check it out @ www.ringling.com

Scholastic book orders for this month are due on or by Tuesday, March 13^th for anyone interested in ordering!

Monday (3/12/12) will be DAY 1 on the special classes’ schedule. **Boys and girls will need sneakers and gym attire on Tuesday, March 13^th – DAY 2, and library books for exchange on Thursday, March 16^th- DAY 4.

***Just a reminder—Daylight Savings Time takes place this weekend. Don’t forget to set your clocks one hour ahead! Spring forward!!!
