· This week in Phonics we will be learning the vowel letter Aa as in apple and acorn. We will focus on the short vowel sound. There will be NO Show & Tell for letter Aa. Students will however be learning their home address! (Check folder for an address paper!)

· For Reading we will begin Unit 2; Animals Live Here. The first story is Life in an Ocean. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter. Please review recognizing capital and lowercase letters from Aa to Zz and the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to and a.

· In Math we will be identifying, describing, and comparing triangles and squares, naming a shape piece using 3 attributes (shape, color, and size), creating and extending AB sound and movement patterns, and sorting collections of objects. Please take some time at home to review these skills and concepts.

· On Monday, October 17th our class will have our first guidance lesson. The topic will be drug and alcohol awareness and Mrs. Diane Rowland will be talking with the class about basic drug and alcohol awareness information and the importance of developing healthy habits and making good decisions. It will be the kick-off for the district wide Red Ribbon Week. (October 23-31)

· October Scholastic Book Orders will be due on Wednesday, October 19th for anyone interested in ordering this month.

· Thursday, October 20th will be the Kindergarten Fall Festival. Any parents or grandparents who have clearances on file in the office are invited to help. Set up will begin at approximately 7:30. Boys and girls are to follow the dress code (NO JEANS). Sneakers are a must for gym class! The Fall Festival is planned for the morning and early afternoon until lunchtime at 1:00. Students will get to spend a large portion of the day with their 4th grade Reading Buddies! **Anyone who has not yet turned in Fall Festival money ($3) is asked to send it in as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.

· We are currently collecting money for the first half of the year parties—Halloween and Christmas. Please send in $4.00 in an envelope with your child’s name and classroom and mark “Party Money” on the outside of the envelope. As Halloween approaches, we ask that you do so as soon as possible. Thank you in advance! (A note is enclosed in your child’s folder)

· This month students are invited to raise awareness for breast cancer by wearing pink every Thursday.

· Friday, October 21st is a scheduled ACT 80 day of school. Students will be dismissed at 11:45. Please make any necessary arrangements for your child and if your child is departing school differently than usual, you MUST send a note to school stating the change. Lunch will be served at 9:50-10:20 and there will be NO SNACK needed.

· Thank you to the moms who helped with the pajama party. It was Pp-PERFECT! Your help was greatly appreciated; without you we couldn’t have had such a successful and fun day!!!
