Week of March 7-11, 2011

Kindergarten News

**This week we will be learning about the consonant letter Jj and its sound as in jump and jar. Instead of the usual Show & Tell we are asking that students tell a joke to the class rather than show a Jj item. If you do not know a joke, you could do an internet search for kids’ jokes and riddles, look for a joke book at the library or local bookstore, or check out the Mini page jokes in the newspaper. Be prepared to laugh your way through the week!

**For Reading we will begin One Little Mouse, by Dori Chaconas. It will be a rhyming /concept story and we will review comprehension skill, sequence. We will introduce consonant blends too. Look for the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder.

**In Math we will be working on paying for items to 50 cents using nickels, counting by 5’s to 100, identifying a cylinder and ordering objects by height, and identifying, creating, and extending ABC patterns. Take some time to practice at home and review daily practice worksheets.

**Scholastic Book orders are due by Thursday, March 10th for anyone interested in ordering this month. Orders can be given to the teacher or placed online at scholastic.com.

**Newspaper in Education Week will begin on Monday, March 7th and end on Friday, March 11th. Check for Mrs. Potts’ ad in the classified section of the Republican and Herald newspaper. Ads can be sent to school during the week for treats. The “I’m a Reader” forms, for those who participated, should be returned to the teacher the next week (March 14-18) with a parent’s signature and initial for each day of the week.

**Kindergarten registration for the 2011-2012 school year, will be held during the upcoming week, March 7-11. Registration is open to all residents of the NS School District. Please pass along this information to anyone with children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall. Appointments should be scheduled with the office.

**Congrats to all the boys and girls for the “dandy” job they did with their dinosaur reports for letter Dd show and tell. It was fun to learn about the different dinosaurs that once roamed the Earth millions of years ago!
