Week of November 15-19, 2010



Kindergarten News

** This week in Phonics we will be learning the vowel letter Ii and its short sound as in igloo and inch and its long sound as in ice. We will focus more on the short vowel sound. Please review sounds and writing of all letters learned so far. There will be NO Show & Tell this week.

--Word List #3 will be tested on Thursday, November 18th, so take some time each day to practice with your child.

**In Reading we will read the book Animal Babies in Grasslands by Jennifer Schofield. We will be talking about grassland animals, review the letter Pp and the /p/ sound, and practice the comprehension skill main idea. The words we, my, and like will be introduced as new high frequency words. Watch for the new Family Times newsletter and phonics story “Pat the Cat” to be sent home.

**For Math, we will learn to order and write money amounts to 10 cents, will identify an object that doesn’t belong to a group (size, shape, or color), will solve a problem by acting it out or by drawing a picture, will practice paying for items to 10 cents using pennies, will copy patterns, and will identify an AB pattern. Please continue to review number writing songs for handwriting practice!

**We will begin preparing for “Thanksgiving”. Students will learn about the first Thanksgiving, will make pilgrim and Native American costumes, and will begin to learn a poem or song for the holiday. We will make some turkeys and will also discuss being “thankful”. The students will even get to use a Native American name for a day!!!

**There will be NO SCHOOL for students on Monday, November 15th due to a scheduled ACT 80 day. School will reopen for students on Tuesday, November 16th. It will be Day 1 on the special classes’ schedule. **Don’t forget sneakers/gym attire and library books for Thursday, November 18th—Day 3.
