Kindergarten News

~This week we will be working on the letter Dd as in dog and dinosaur. There will be NO Show and Tell, but in its place we will be giving our dinosaur reports. Please follow your classroom schedule! **Details and information about the reports were sent home in your child’s folder earlier in the week. Word List 14 will be tested on Friday, February 24^th. Please practice daily!

~For Reading we will continue Unit 4 with the classic traditional tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears as retold by Valeri Gorbachev. We will review the comprehension skill, character and the letter sound /g/. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

~In Math we will be practice ABC patterns, solve a problem by “Guessing and Checking”, identify nickels, trade 5 pennies for a nickel, count by 5’s, and count nickels to 25 cents. Boys and girls will practice writing the numbers 1-20 correctly too. Take some time at home to review the coins penny, nickel, and dime and the values of each.

~On Monday, February 20^th there will be NO SCHOOL for students. Enjoy the long weekend and take some time to work on your dinosaur reports! School will reopen on Tuesday, February 21^st and it will be Day 2 on the special classes’ rotation schedule. **Students will need gym attire & sneakers on Tuesday and library books on Thursday

~FYI: The cafeteria will be offering students TUNA Sandwiches (in addition to the daily menu selections) every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday starting February 22^nd through the month of March.

~Toothbrush charts will be due back at the start of March. Any student who returns his/her chart will receive a “dental health” treat from Mrs. Potts. Remember to continue to eat healthy foods, brush and floss your teeth, and visit a dentist at least once a year to keep your smile looking great!

Kindergarten News

**This week we will be learning about the consonant letter Yy and its sound as in yarn and yellow. Please continue practicing writing and identifying all the letters we have learned so far. We will be having Show and Tell and may even have a yogurt taste test. Yum! Yum!

Word List 13 will be tested on Thursday, February 16^th. Practice daily!!! (**Note the change from Friday, Feb. 17^th due to the ACT 80 day and No school for students.)

**For Reading our next story will be “One Little Mouse!” by Dori Chaconas. It will be a rhyming/concept story and we will review the comprehension

skill, sequence. We will introduce consonant blends too. Look for the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder.

**In Math we will be copying

line segments, shapes, and designs on a Geoboard, ordering objects by length and measuring length using nonstandard units, making an ABC pattern using pattern

blocks, and acting out some stories using teddy bear counters. Please review daily practice pages at home.

**Even though Anti-Bully week is over take some time to talk with your child about bullying and discuss what he/she learned.

**Thank-You to all the students, parents, and grandparents who collected Coupons for

our Troops. We our now finished collecting and our Valentine’s Day Project is coming to its end. Please do not send any more coupons to school. An extra BIG Thank-You to Jackie Kadziela, for initiating the project and especially for, all her hard work in cutting and preparing the coupons for mailing. It was quite a time consuming job!!!

**On Tuesday,

February 14^th we will be having our Valentine’s party from 11:30-1:00. Valentines will be “delivered” at the party, so be sure to bring them by Tuesday!

Kindergarten News

In Phonics this week we will be learning the vowel letter Ee with its short sound as in elephant and egg and its long sound as in equal and eagle. We will be focusing on the short vowel sound. We will NOT have Show and Tell! **Word List 12 will be tested on Friday, February 10^th. Practice daily!!!

For Reading we will read the story, My Lucky Day, by Keiko Kasza. It is an animal fantasy (fiction) story and we will focus on the comprehension skill cause and effect. This week we will review the /l/ sound and connect it with the letter Ll.

In Math we will continue working with dimes and counting by 10’s to 100. We will begin to compare lengths; shorter and longer, and order objects by length. We will practice writing the numbers 11-16 correctly. *Review daily practice pages @ home.

Monday, February 6^th will be Day 3. Boys and girls will need library books on Tuesday, Feb. 7^th, Day 4. (Don’t forget sneakers and gym attire on Friday, Feb. 10^th)

Kindergarten News

This week we will be learning the letter Cc with a /k/ sound as in cat and candy. We will learn the K & C Spelling Rule. The rule is that we spell the /k/ sound with the letter k when the sound is followed by the letters e, i, and y. We spell the /k/ sound with the letter c when the sound is followed by the letters a, o, u, and any consonant. For example:

K before e, i, or y C before a, o, u, or any consonant

**Word List 11 will be tested on Friday, February 3^rd. Practice daily!

For Reading we will begin Unit 4 with the story Bunny Day by Rick Walton. It will be about what adventures take place in Bunny’s day from breakfast to bedtime. The focus skill of this story is sequence. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

In Math we will be working on identifying a 1 cup measuring cup and following a recipe, identifying full, half full, and empty containers, and identifying a quart container. We will practice covering a design in more than one way using pattern blocks and will work on some problem solving by Acting it out and Drawing a picture! Review the daily practice sheets at home with your child.

Hip Hip Hooray! Our 100^th day is just two school days away!!! Please practice counting from 0-100 and work on counting a collection of 100 items. On Tuesday, January 31^st students are asked to dress as if they were 100 years old!

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Please encourage your child to brush his/her teeth at least twice a day and to practice good dental health habits. Watch for a special “toothbrush chart” to come home on Tuesday in your child’s folder! (Details will follow.)

United States’ reports will be sent back home next week. The boys and girls did an UNBELIEVABLY good job with their presentations to the class. Thanks to all the parents for their help and preparation.

This week our class was introduced to the iPad 2. Boys and girls learned how to open, close, and navigate apps! They were so excited to use this new equipment. They followed directions well and handled them with care. J

Just a few reminders and upcoming dates:

-- We have begun to collect party money for the second half of the year parties. Anyone who has not yet sent in his/her $4.00 is asked to do so as soon as possible. Thank you!

-- The Valentine’s Day party will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 14^th. *We do not want anyone to feel left out so if you are writing out valentines, please make sure to have one for everyone in the class! Valentines may be sent in the week of Feb. 6-10. (A class Valentine list was sent home on Thursday, January 26^th.)

-- The next PTO meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 13^th @ 6:30 in the school cafeteria. All are invited and encouraged to attend.

-- Wednesday, February 2^nd is Groundhog’s Day. Check to see if Phil sees his shadow and whether or not there will be 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring!

· This week in Phonics we will be finishing up the vowel letter Uu and will begin learning the consonant letter Zz as in zebra and zoo. We will NOT be having Show & Tell. Students will be learning their Zip codes. Friday, Mrs. Potts will ask students to say their zip codes and treats will be given! **Word List 10 will be tested on Friday, January 27^th. Please practice daily!

· We will be starting the book Hide Clyde! for Reading. It will be about a chameleon that changes so he can hide, or camouflage himself. We will introduce the comprehension skill, main idea. We will review the short /o/ sound in words and continue to work with the high frequency words; they, of, and you. Watch for your new Family Times news!

· In Math, we will begin to combine sets by counting on and using numbers to describe how many objects are in a set. **This will be our introduction to addition. We will be identifying the numbers 0-20 and will put the numbers in order. Take some time to review the daily practice pages with your child!

· Tuesday, January 31^st is our tentative 100^th day of school! We will be planning a celebration. Practice counting from 0-100 and watch next week for a 100^th day newsletter with more information about our celebration.

· Congratulations to all students who successfully completed their United States’ reports! It was a fun and educational way to learn about some of the states in our country. Thank you to all the parents who helped “prepare” the children for their first oral report.

Kindergarten News

· In Phonics we will be working on the vowel letter Uu and the sounds of /u/ as in umbrella and unicorn. We will focus on the short vowel sound like up, under, and uncle. Please continue to review all letters learned and blending 2, 3, and 4 letter words. We will NOT have Show and Tell; instead we will be doing reports on some states of the United States. Students will be showing and telling some information about an assigned state as part of an oral report and research project! (Information was sent home on Wed., Jan. 11^th.)

· In Reading we will continue with Unit 3 with the story Seeds by Ken Robbins. It is an informational text about how plants grow and change. We will practice the comprehension skill: draw conclusions and will review the /o/ sound in words. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

· In Math we will be comparing sets of objects and comparing numbers through 6, weighing objects using nonstandard units and ordering objects by weight, combining sets by counting on and using numbers to describe how many objects are in a set, and identifying & ordering the numbers 0-20. Take some time to review daily practice pages!

· Since we are soon half way through Kindergarten, the teachers are asking that each student practice tying his/her shoes. This is a skill that we would like to see your child master before first grade. Remember, Practice Makes Perfect!

Kindergarten News

~This week in Phonics we will be learning the letter Bb and its sound as in boys and balloon. Start looking for your Show & Tell! Word List #8 will be tested on Friday, January 13^th. Practice daily!!!

~We will begin the Reading story, farfallina and marcel. In this book we will talk about the comprehension strategy “plot” and how friendships are formed and change. We will also review the letter Ff.

~In Math we will be working on matching numbers to a set using dot cubes (dice), counting by 10’s to 100, sharing a whole by separating it into two equal parts, and copying and extending AB and ABB patterns. Boys and girls should practice writing numbers from 0-10 correctly.

~The second marking period will be ending on the 17^th and we will begin testing for report cards next week. ***Students will be asked to write correctly their first and last names, numbers 0-10, and capital and lowercase letters learned (a, f, g, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, and t). They will need to identify letter sounds, numbers 0-20, count orally to 100, basic shapes, tell time to the hour, and rhyming words. Students will be asked to blend 2, 3, and 4 letter words and read some learned high frequency sight words ***(a, I, the, is, to, am, little, have, for, my, he, like, we, of, one, was, love, you, do, are, me, she, with, into, and from). Please review these skills with your child. Report cards will be tentatively sent home on Friday, January 20^th.

~DIBELS testing will continue this week throughout the grade levels. Kindergarten is scheduled for either Thursday or Friday, January 12^th or January 13^th. Be sure your child gets a good night’s sleep on Wednesday and Thursday!

Kindergarten News

The week we return from holiday break we will be

learning the consonant letter Kk as in kite and kangaroo. Start looking for your Show and Tell for the letter Kk, and follow the schedule, which will begin on Tuesday, January 3^rd. One day during the week, the boys will get to be “Kings for a Day!” (Girls will be returned the favor when we learn the letter Q for queen!) **Word List 7 will be tested on Friday, January 6^th. Practice over the holidays.

We will be Kid Writing about the holidays, and the boys and girls will get the opportunity to write about what they did in their time off from school!

For Reading we will begin continue with Unit 3; Watch Me Change. The next story will be See How We Grow by Katacha Diaz. The skill cause and effect will be introduced along with the /d/ sound. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

In Math we will count by 10’s, identify dimes, trade 10 pennies for a dime, use dimes to 50 cents, practice patterns, and match numbers to a set. Take some time to review skills and daily practice pages with your child.

Just a reminder: There will be an early dismissal on Friday, December 23^rd. Students will be dismissed at 11:45am. **Please note there will be NO BREAKFAST served due to the early dismissal. (Lunch for Kindergarten will be from 9:50-10:20 and art class @ 11:00.)

School will be closed from December 24^th through January 2^nd. We will be back to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. **Take some time over the long holiday to review and practice Phonics, Handwriting, and Math. It is also a great time to read together with your child and maybe even take the opportunity to let him/her “show off” his/her reading skills to visiting relatives!!!!

Kindergarten News

· This week in Phonics we will be reviewing all letters and letter sounds learned so far. We will try our first Spelling Test! Please practice making 2,3, and 4 letter words using just these letters: l, o, g, h, t, p, a, n, m, i, s, f, and r. There will be NO show and tell.

· For Reading we will finish up the story Little Quack. We will not start our next story until after the holiday break.

· For Math we will practice counting to 100 by 10’s and introduce the coin, dime. We will work more with patterns, AB & ABB, and practice counting with pennies.

· Students will attend a PTO Program by Rand Whipple on Monday, December 19^th in the gym. It is titled, “Burble, Fizz, Kaboom”. Be sure to ask your child all about it!!!

· Students will meet with their 4^th grade Reading buddies on Tuesday, December 20^th instead of Thursday. Students will give their buddies a special photo card and goodie box of Hershey Hugs & Kisses for Christmas.

· On Wednesday, December 21^st students and teachers will travel to the high school to hear the High School students perform a holiday concert for the elementary. K-2 will go in the morning. Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la!

· Thursday, December 22^nd will be our Polar Express day and our classroom Christmas party. Students may dress like the characters in the book and wear their pajamas to school. Robes and/or slippers may be brought along too! (Just be sure to wear coats and shoes/sneaker to school!!) All Aboard!! We will watch the movie from 9:15-11:00, have recess from 11:00-11:30, then party from 11:30-1:00. **Parent helpers may after 11:00 to help set up for the party and help with the HOT CHOCOLATE! Students will have lunch at 1:05 and will attend their special class (Computers) from 1:55-2:35.

· On Friday, December 23^rd students will have an early dismissal @ 11:45 am. There will be NO breakfast served.

~This week in Phonics we will be learning the letter Rr and its sound as in rabbit and reindeer. This is our 13^th letter so we will be half way through the alphabet! Start looking for your Show & Tell! Word List 6 Test will be on Friday, December 16^th. Please practice daily! (If you are interested as a follow up to our story Little Panda, you can check out the live Panda Cam at the following website: http://www.sandiegozoo.org/pandacam/ to see some real pandas at the San Diego Zoo.)

~In Math we will be working on identifying a cube and counting with one-to-one correspondence, matching a set of objects to a number card, copying line segments, shapes, and designs on a geoboard, and counting by 10’s. We will also be introducing dimes.

~We will be reading the story Little Quack by Lauren Thompson. It will be an animal fantasy story. The comprehension skill we will target is “plot”, or the “what happens part of the story”. Watch for the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder!

~Anyone interested in getting the animals at the SPCA a “Gift for the Holidays” are asked to send it to school by Monday, December 19^th. All items collected will be given to the SPCA on Tuesday, December 20^th. (A wish list was sent home earlier with more details.)

~Our “We Like Apples” and “I Like” books have been misplaced. If anyone comes across either of them at home, then please return them to school. Thank you!!!

Just a few reminders:

*Please remind your child to keep up with his/her schoolwork and behavior and keep in mind that Santa is watching and waiting to hear daily updates from Sam, our elf on the shelf!!!

*Students will need to be prepared for colder weather @ recess. Warm coats, gloves or mittens, hats and/or scarves are needed. Recess is a half an hour and unless the ground is snow-covered or it is too cold we will try to get outside for “fresh air”.

**This week we will be learning the consonant letter Ff as in fish and feather. Start looking for your Show and Tell for the letter Ff. Be sure to keep practicing blending and reading words from the weekly word lists. *Word List 5 will be tested on Friday, December 9^th, so please practice!

**In math we will make shapes on a geoboard, practice paying for items using pennies, identify ordinal position, create, describe, and extend shape patterns, practice telling time to the hour, and solve problems by acting them out. Review the daily practice pages with your child!

**This week in Reading we will begin the story Little Panda, by Joanne Ryder. This is an informational text, and we will be talking about “Animals Grow and Change”. We will focus on the skill—compare and contrast and will work with the letter sounds of /n/ and /b/.

**Please remind your child to keep up with his/her schoolwork and behavior. With the excitement of the holiday approaching, students need to remember school is not finished yet! Thank you for your support.

**We will read the story Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman in Reading. We will be discussing hibernation and will learn to differentiate between real and make believe. Watch for the newFamily Times newsletter to be sent home.

**In Math we will be working on matching a number card to a set of objects, naming a shape using 3 attributes (shape, color, and size), acting out story problems using pennies, and Identifying time to the hour. Take some time to review the daily practice pages and try to practice these skills at home with your child.

**NSE Picture Re-Take/Make-up day will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8^th. Please make sure if your child is having picture re-takes to send his/her first package of pictures with them that day. If your child is having pictures taken for the first time, the payment is due the same day as pictures are taken.

**Scholastic book orders for this month are due by Thursday, Nov. 10^th for anyone interested in ordering. Orders can be placed online at scholastic.com or can be sent to school with your child!

**Ms. Clarissa Geary, Director of Education, Training and Volunteer Services, will be presenting a Personal Body Safety program to the class on Thursday, November 10^th from 9:00-9:40. **In Reading we will read the book Animal Babies in Grasslands by Jennifer Schofield. We will be talking about grassland animals, review the letter Pp and the /p/ sound, and practice the comprehension skill main idea. The words we, my, and like will be introduced as new high frequency words. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter and phonics story “Pat the Cat” to be sent home!

**For Math we will be ordering the numbers 0-10, identifying a missing number, playing BINGO with the numbers 0-9, identifying and counting pennies, and matching a number card to a set of objects. Be sure to review daily practice pages!!!

**Parent/teacher conferences will be held on Tuesday, November 1^st. Parents can either attend the 4:00pm or 5:00pm session. If you are unable to attend please let the teacher know whether a phone conference is needed. Yellow forms were sent home last week with details. · This week in Phonics we will be continuing with the vowel letter Aa as in apple and acorn and reviewing previously learned letters. We will focus on the short vowel sound. There will be NO Show & Tell again. We will not begin a new letter until next week. A note with an attached Word List #1 is coming home for practice. The list of words will be tested the week of the 31^st. Take some time to practice at home with the blending of sounds to read words. **This list is to be kept at home.

· Since the end of the marking period is approaching we will begin testing of the 7 letters and 9 sounds (short and long Aa and Oo) learned in phonics (Ll, Oo, Gg, Hh, Tt, Pp, and Aa), the high frequency words learned in Reading and in class (I, am, the, little, to, a, have, is, my, and of), Recognizing and producing rhyming words, copying, extending, and creating patterns, identifying the 4 basic shapes (square, triangle, circle, and rectangle), identifying and writing the numerals 0-10 and counting orally from 1-100.

· For Reading we will be begin the story Armadillo’s Orange by Jim Arnosky. We will be talking about orange groves and learning about the letter Ss and the /s/ sound. We will focus on learning the setting of a story and will practice the learned high frequency words.

· In Math we will be sorting a collection of objects, ordering the numbers 1-10, counting backward from 10, identifying ordinal position to fourth, and identifying a missing number. Please take some time at home to review these skills and concepts.

· This week the students and teachers will be recognizing Red Ribbon Week with the theme, “It’s up to me to be drug free”. We will support the event by wearing the following: Monday—“Turn your back on drugs” (Wear your clothes backwards); Tuesday—“Sock it to drugs day” (Wear crazy socks); Wednesday—“Put a cap on drugs day”(Wear crazy hats); Thursday—“Drugs will turn you inside out” (Wear shirts inside out); and Friday—“Red spirit day” (Wear red school spirit shirts)

· Friday, October 28^th will be our classroom Halloween parade and party from 1:45-3:00. The parade will begin at 2:15pm. Students will parade in the upper bus loop. All are welcome to come to see the children parade. Parents who are PTO members and have clearances on file will be able to enter the building for 1:45. Parties will end by 3:00pm. Your child should NOT wear his/her costume to school! Please send the costume to school in a bag with your child’s name on the outside. Students will get dressed in costumes with the help of teachers and homeroom helpers. Keep in mind students will be dressing at school, so keep the costumes as simple as possible; (No spraying hair at school, or a face full of make-up at school)

· With trick-or-treat approaching, we ask that students do not bring candy for snacks at school and limit extra candy in lunch boxes too. Thanks for your cooperation!

· For Reading we will begin Unit 2; Animals Live Here. The first story is Life in an Ocean. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter. Please review recognizing capital and lowercase letters from Aa to Zz and the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to and a.

· In Math we will be identifying, describing, and comparing triangles and squares, naming a shape piece using 3 attributes (shape, color, and size), creating and extending AB sound and movement patterns, and sorting collections of objects. Please take some time at home to review these skills and concepts.

· On Monday, October 17^th our class will have our first guidance lesson. The topic will be drug and alcohol awareness and Mrs. Diane Rowland will be talking with the class about basic drug and alcohol awareness information and the importance of developing healthy habits and making good decisions. It will be the kick-off for the district wide Red Ribbon Week. (October 23-31)

· October Scholastic Book Orders will be due on Wednesday, October 19^th for anyone interested in ordering this month.

· Thursday, October 20^th will be the Kindergarten Fall Festival. Any parents or grandparents who have clearances on file in the office are invited to help. Set up will begin at approximately 7:30. Kindergarten News

· There WILL be school on Monday, October 10^th (Columbus Day). (It has been changed to make-up the extreme weather day/school cancellation on Thursday, September 8^th.) Lunch on Monday will be: Hamburger on a roll w/ cheese. The alternates will be the monthly Monday choices.

· This week we will be learning the consonant letter Pp as in pig, pink, and pumpkin, and to celebrate we will have a Pajama Party on Friday, October 14^th. Students are asked to wear their pajamas to school. Robes and slippers are optional, however we ask that students wear sneakers or shoes to school and change into slippers after they arrive (due to outside recess and possible inclement weather). **Keep in mind that pancakes and punch will be served in the morning so boys and girls need NOT eat a lot for breakfast—unless they do not like pancakes, then they should eat breakfast as usual. We will have Show & Tell for the letter Pp so take a peek around your house and pick something to share with the class.

· We have finished the story Julius and will begin the story Dig, Dig, Digging in Reading. We will be talking about how machines help people. We will be practicing the sound /t/ and the skill classifying and categorizing. Watch for the new Family Times newsletter and continue to review the high frequency words; I, am, the, little, to, and a when your read together.

· For Math we will be creating and reading an AB color pattern, acting out story problems using teddy bear counters, identifying ordinal position to fourth, and will be covering designs using pattern blocks. Continue to review the daily math practice pages as well.

· October Scholastic book orders will be due on Wednesday, October 19^th for anyone interested in ordering this month.

· There will be another Fall Festival planning meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 12^th @ 6:00pm at the Mine Shaft restaurant in Ashland. All who would like to help with the preparations and planning are invited and encouraged to attend.

· Thursday, October 20^th is our FALL FESTIVAL. ** Anyone who has not yet turned in FALL FESTIVAL MONEY $$ is asked to try and send it in as soon as possible. The parents who are planning the FALL FESTIVAL will need to shop for supplies and goodies. Thank you for your cooperation.

· Fire Prevention Week is October 9-15. Please take some time at home to discuss fire safety with your child and family. Be sure to have a practice fire drill, create an escape plan with a designated meeting place, and Be Cool About Fire Safety!

· Mr. Zvorsky’s last day of student teaching in Kindergarten will be Friday, October 14^th. It’s hard to believe 7 weeks have gone by already! I am asking that you help your child at home to write a thank you note or card to Mr. Zvorsky. The note or card could be hand-made drawings with a note of thanks or a signed card expressing thanks to Mr. Zvorsky for all his successful efforts in being a student teacher in our Kindergarten class. **Notes/cards can be sent in to school on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday in your child’s folder.

Monday, October 10^th will be Day 4--Book Exchange on the special classes’ schedule. Please remember to bring Library books for exchange. **Students will need gym attire and sneakers on Thursday, Oct. 13^th!

Kindergarten News

In the upcoming week in Phonics, we will be learning Tt as in tent, tail, and tie. Take some time to find items at home that begin with the letter Tt sound for Show and Tell! Also, boys and girls are asked to learn their telephone numbers. Please practice at home!

We will be starting our 5^th story for Reading, Julius. Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home on Monday. Our focus will be on the story’s setting. Continue to read at home and practice the high frequency words; I, am, the, to, of, you and little; practice rhyming and counting syllables in words and identifying the letters from Aa-Zz.

For Math we will be creating and reading an AB color pattern, acting out story problems using teddy bear counters, identifying ordinal position to fourth, and will be covering designs using pattern blocks. Be sure to review daily practice pages and continue to review number writing for numbers 0-9.

Our theme for the upcoming weeks will be Fire Safety. There are many activities planned to teach the students about fire safety. Don’t forget to ask your child what he/she has learned!

**Please help your child learn his/her 4-digit computer number. This will help him/her log into the computer quickly and give him/her more time to work when using computers at school. (We can also stop wearing our name badges to lunch once all students know their ID number for the cooks!)

We have been practicing writing our first names. Please watch your child as he/she is writing. Be sure to check if letters are beginning at the top, not the bottom and also guide him/her to use the lines when forming the letters. Thank you!

Box tops for education, Turkey Hill Moo lids and Campbell’s labels will be collected at the end of each month. If you have any at your home, then please send them to school with your child. The box tops, lids and labels help our school to earn extra money and the homeroom with the most collected each month will receive a treat from PTO!

We will soon begin our writing program called Kid Writing. Several times a week we will break into “centers” and students will work in small groups working on different activities while the teachers help students write and illustrate their own stories. When our Kid writing books are filled they will be sent home for you to keep. Hopefully we will have a few stories completed for viewing at Parent Conferences in November!

· There will be another Fall Festival planning meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 5^th @ 6:00pm at the Mine Shaft restaurant in Ashland. All who would like to help with the preparations and planning are invited and encouraged to attend. **The Kindergarten Fall Festival will be held at the school on Thursday, October 20^th. Kindergarten News

~ This week we will be learning the letter Hh as in hat, hippo, and horse. As part of our study with the letter Hh we will have a “Hat Day” on Friday, September 30^th. **Students are asked to wear a favorite hat, a funny hat, or even a homemade hat. (You can be creative with this if you want! Students will be able to wear the hat all day—we do just ask that students do not share hats.) Show and Tell will be with items that begin with the /h/ sound. Check your schedule and start hunting!

~ Our Reading story this week will be Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten. Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home on Monday. Review the high frequency words: I, am, the, to, of and little and practice letter recognition for the letters Aa-Zz. We will be talking about People in Communities and will be learning how to classify and categorize.

~In Math we will be counting to 10 with one-to-one correspondence, work with pattern blocks to create and cover designs, and sort objects by color. Students should continue to practice writing numbers 0-9 and sing the number writing verse for each number. We will explore the shapes; circle and rectangle, will identify and order numbers 1-5, identify a missing number and identify most and fewest on a graph. Please review the lessons sent home daily!!!

~Our theme for this week will be APPLES. Students are asked to bring in an apple on Monday, September 26^th. The apple can be any size, color, or kind. Each day of the week we will use the apples for sorting, graphing, and/or tasting! We will begin our study of apples by celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on Monday, Sept. 26^th. Many apple activities have been planned. It should be a sweet week!

~ We have been practicing writing our first names. Please watch your child as he/she is writing. Be sure to check if letters are beginning at the top, not the bottom and also guide him/her to use the lines when forming letters. Capital letters should only be used at the beginning of names!

~ ATTENTION: There will be a Fall Festival Planning meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 28^th @ 6:00 pm at the Mine Shaft restaurant in Ashland. The Fall Festival will be held at the school on Thursday, Oct. 20^th. **Each student is asked to bring in $3.00 to help pay for the supplies needed for the festival. ~The PTO store will be open for Kindergarten on a Monday from 8:30-8:45. Students are asked to shop ONLY at this time. Please do not put school store money in your child’s folder. (Teachers will not see it until after the store closes.) Students should keep it separate in book bags where they can reach it easily for shopping before homeroom.

~ September Scholastic Book Orders are due to Mrs. Potts by Tuesday, Sept. 27^th. If interested, be sure to return your completed order forms and money OR place your online order by Tuesday.

~ Our school has its own TV news report on Thursdays. Take some time and check it out!! You can view each broadcast from the North Schuylkill Website. (www. Northschuylkill.net) Once you are at the website, scroll down to ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, click on NSE TV, and then click on the NSE TV icon on the screen. Students are the reporters and students throughout the school can be recognized during broadcasts.

~ Tuesday, Sept. 27^th the students will have hearing screenings in the library. Please try to have your child present at school and remind them to be QUIET during testing!

Kindergarten News

· This week in Phonics we will be learning the letter Gg and its sound as in goat. Please review the sounds /l/, /o/, and /g/ and how to write the letters we have already learned. We will have Show & Tell for Gg, so please follow your classroom schedule. We finally were able to have our Luau! Thank you to all the helpers who joined in the fun!!!

· On Monday, we will begin our 3^rd Reading story Plaidypus Lost. We will be talking about how families cooperate, we will be learning to recognize the letters Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, and Ss, and we will practice the comprehension skill: sequence. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter to come home in your child’s folder. Continue to read at home, talk about story characters and setting, and recognize the letters from Aa-Nn, as well as the high frequency words I and am. ***So far we have introduced the following words for Reading and Phonics: I, am, the, to, is, my, and like. Take some time at home to practice these words with your child.

The Fall Festival will be held on Thursday October 20^th. If you are unable to make the meeting on 9/21/10, but want to help and/or participate at the Fall Festival, then please send a note to school with your contact information and it will be given to someone at the meeting. Kindergarten Newsletter

~We have finished our second week of school and the students are adjusting very well! We also learned to recognize and write the letter “L” this week. The students liked showing their “L” items from home for show-and-tell. **THE LUAU IS BEING RESCHEDULED FOR NEXT FRIDAY, SEPT. 16^th. Students may dress for the luau next Friday.

**We will start using the behavior calendar at the back of your child’s communication folder beginning Monday, Sept. 12^th. Check the calendar daily to see what “kind” of day your child had at school. (An explanation of the calendar will be in the Keep side of the folder on Monday.)

~Our Phonics letter for this week is “Oo” as in octopus. The show-and-tell schedule for the letter “Oo” will be the same as this past week. New “brown bags” are in your child’s folder. The letter Oo is a vowel and has 2 sounds. We will focus on the short sound, but will also introduce the long sound that “says its own name”.

~We started Reading with the story, The Little School Bus this week. Watch for your Family Times newsletter to come home with details about our upcoming story and skills we will be working on in Reading. Please review the Amazing words, the ordinal numbers first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth, letter recognition of letters Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd, and Ee, the story element “character”, and the high frequency words I and am.

~In Math we will continue to work with counting bears, pattern blocks, and linking cubes. We will also practice counting to 5 with 1:1 correspondence, creating an AB color pattern, identifying most and fewest on a graph, and using positional words and phrases: over, under, on top of, behind, in back of, in front of, beside, inside, and outside. Students should practice writing the numbers from 0-9 while singing the number writing verses on their practice pages. Our first math assessment will be identifying the 4 basic shapes; circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. Take some time over the weekend to review them at home.

~Our Kindergarten class has begun a science unit called Trees. We have been observing and comparing the trees in and around the schoolyard. We have adopted a maple tree as our “class tree” to watch throughout the seasons. We’ve been learning about the tree parts; roots, trunk, branches, and leaves. **Your child may come home with lots of information and questions about trees and their parts. You can join in the tree study by taking your child for walks in your neighborhood to observe trees and to compare how they are alike and how they are different. See which trees lose their leaves in the fall and which keep them all year? Look closely at the leaves. Do the trees have buds, flowers, fruit, or seeds? You might notice things about trees that you never thought about before!!!

~On Thursdays our class meets with their 4^th grade Reading Buddies from Mrs. Liem’s homeroom. Boys and girls have been matched up with 4^th graders to listen to stories and eventually practice their own reading skills. Be sure to ask your child about his/her buddy.

~The School-wide Book Fair will also take place in the Large Group Instruction Room next week, September 12-16. Information is enclosed in your child’s folder. **Parents will be able to shop and/or browse with their child on Monday night from 4-7:00 p.m. if interested. Our class will be shopping in school on Wednesday, September 14^th. (**Please note that the Book Fair is in addition to the Firefly and SeeSaw order form sent home for our class (due by Sept. 27^th). Try not to mix up your order and/or money.)

~ There will be a PTO meeting on Monday, Sept. 12^th in the cafeteria beginning at 6:30. All are invited and encouraged to attend.

Congratulations! You made it through the first week of Kindergarten!

**There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday due to the Labor Day Holiday. Enjoy the long weekend.

Tuesday, September 6^th will be Day 1. Please check your special classes’ schedule. Remember students will need sneakers for gym class Day 2 (Wed. 9/7)

· Next week in Phonics we will be learning the letter Ll as in lion, lemonade, and licorice. Please review the letter and sound with your child at home. On Thursday, Sept. 8^th Kindergarten will have a LUAU. Students do NOT need to follow the school dress code for next Thursday’s luau. Students are asked to dress tropical: bright colors, floral prints,

Hawaiian shirts, etc… More details will be sent home next week.

· We will begin Show & Tell next week too. Please help your child to find an item or two around the house that begins with the /l/ sound to share with the class. Please keep in mind--- the items should not be valuable and should fit into a brown bag. (A brown lunch bag is enclosed in your child’s folder.) Each child has a scheduled day to “show and tell”. Each week the schedule will be the same, but the letter for show and tell items will change weekly. **Please be sure to check the schedule in your child’s folder (middle plastic sheets).

· We’ve begun our Math. We will continue working on number writing and have begun to learn about the day, month, and year on a calendar and have started counting the days of school for number recognition and numbers in sequence. Please review practice pages that come home in your child’s folder.

· Continue to check your child’s communication folder daily and if you haven’t already returned all the school forms and necessary paperwork, then please return them as soon as possible. Items on the KEEP side need to be removed at home. **Any money, notes, or items for the teacher to see NEED to be in your child’s folder. Mrs. Potts doesn’t look through book bags---only the folders!

· We now have begun our class snack donations. Anyone who chose to participate in the class snack will not need to bring a snack unless a note was sent home in your child’s folder. I usually give at least 2-3 days notice. We do not have a noted allergy. 20 students will be participating with the rotation. **Parents who requested to provide a snack daily should have received a note reminding them to pack a snack each day. **For those providing snack for the class, remember that if cups, spoons, or napkins are needed you will need to provide those as well.

· Friday, September 9^th is School Picture Day! Information will be sent home in your child’s folder. K-Potts will be photographed @ approximately 9:00 am. **Money is due at the time of pictures and school dress code is to be followed on picture day!

· Next week we will begin homework. Any homework pages will be stamped “HOMEWORK” and will be placed in the Return side of the folder. Homework needs to be completed the night it comes home and needs to be returned the next day. (Be sure to check the return side of the folder daily.) **Homework will also be posted on my blog each week. · Every Friday of the school year is a spirit day! This is completely optional! It is done to promote school spirit and enthusiasm for our sports teams. The children are allowed to wear any North Schuylkill t-shirt or NS shirt and uniform pants or uniform shorts. The children may dress in regular uniform clothing if you wish.

· Try to make sure your child has his/her bus tag every day. The end of the day is hectic and some children don’t know their bus numbers yet!

· If anyone still has forms to complete, then please complete and return them as soon as possible. Thank you!!!

Welcome!

Hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and is ready to start school!

This week we will be very busy getting to know the school & classroom rules and procedures, as well as, meeting our classmates, special classes' teachers, and fellow Kindergarten teachers and students. We will follow a whole weeks' schedule and introduce Saxon Phonics and Math programs.

Show and Tell for the letter Ll will begin next week. Brown bags will be sent home on Friday, 9/2. (Please follow the Show & Tell schedule in the middle of your child's folder.)

Just a few reminders:

Please complete and return all school and classroom forms sent home in your child's RETURN side of his/her communication folder ASAP.**FOLDERS NEED TO GO TO AND FROM SCHOOL DAILY.
Students will need sneakers and gym attire for Day 2 (Tuesday, August 30th). **see special classes' schedule in the middle of your child's folder.

Can you believe this is your last Kindergarten newsletter!!!

There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, May 30^thdue to the Memorial Day holiday. School will reopen on Tuesday, May 31^st.

Thursday, June 2^nd will be our last day of school. Dismissal on Monday will be at 11:45 for bus students. Walkers will be dismissed @ 11:40. Please be sure to send a note if your child will be a walker, will be going on a different bus, will be getting off at a different stop, or going home different than his/her usual way. **Kindergarten will be eating lunch early Thursday so there will be NO SNACK.

Students will be bringing home several items on Thursday so be sure your child brings his/her backpack with him/her. Report cards and ordered graduation DVDs will be handed out on the last day. **Anyone absent can pick his/her things up at the school office. (Please call before coming to the school to be sure someone is there to help you.)

*Reminder: All library books that are overdue or lost must be returned or paid for by the last day of school. Students with outstanding library books will not receive their report cards on Thursday. We hope everyone enjoyed our Kindergarten Graduation. We are all so proud of the graduating class. The ceremony was the perfect ending to our Kindergarten school year at NSE. Thanks to all who attended!

Kindergarten News

In Phonics next week we will be learning the combinations ar, or, and er as in star, horse, and butter. Please continue to review all digraphs, combinations, and letters learned. NO Show & Tell.

Monday is the big day! Kindergarten Graduation will be held in the High School Auditorium on Monday, May 23^rd beginning at 6:30pm. Doors will open @ 6:00 PM. The program will begin at 6:30 sharp so please keep that in mind and allow time to park and find a seat. Students who are graduating will need to report to the gymnasium. There are no reserved seats or a limit to the number of guests per student, therefore, seating is on a first come first serve basis!

*Kindergarten Graduation DVD orders and money are due no later than Wednesday, May 25^th. If you are interested in purchasing a DVD, the cost is $8.99 (checks made payable to Legal-eze) Green order forms were sent home earlier in your child’s folder.

**Students will be wearing caps and gowns for graduation. Students are asked to wear a white collared shirt for the evening graduation (not during the day to school). Shoes will be visible so plan accordingly. Girls are reminded not to wear items in their hair, since they will be wearing a cap. (Pony tails and hair accessories will get in the way of the caps sitting flat.)

**Students will be exiting the auditorium and going to the gym after the performance. Parents can look for their child in the gym by class/teacher.

PLEASE NOTE: Graduation caps and gowns must be returned to the teacher after the graduation ceremony. Tassels are to be taken home as a keepsake.

Kindergarten will practice for graduation on Monday, May 23^rd in the afternoon at the High School. Please try to have your child at school for this practice so he/she will know what to do for the evening ceremony. Students will be walking to the high school, so please dress your child in shoes for walking and a jacket with a hood or an umbrella in case of rain.

Thursday, May 26^th is our class field trip to the Ringling Bros. Circus at the Giant Center in Hershey. Students who are carrying their lunch are reminded to be sure to bring a drink too. Chaperones and students need to be at the school no later than 8:40. We will be leaving the school as close to 9:00am as possible. Students will return during regular school hours. Students are to wear their blue NSE T-shirts provided to them by the PTO. Field trip details had been sent home previously in your child’s folder. If you have any questions or concerns, then please contact Mrs. Potts.

Friday, May 27^th will be the PTO Carnival. This is a day of fun and games put together by the PTO. Please dress your child for the weather and apply sunscreen as needed. Students should wear sneakers and clothes for outdoor activities (NO dresses or skirts please!) ***Due to the Carnival the cafeteria will only be serving deli hoagies -there will be NO alternate lunch choices.

REMINDER: All library books that are overdue or lost must be returned or paid for by the last day of school. Students with outstanding library books and/or lunch account balances will not receive their report cards.

Kindergarten News

In Phonics next week we will be working on digraph ch as in cheese and digraph ee as in sheep. Continue to practice all digraphs, combinations, and letters learned. We will NOT have Show & Tell. Boys and girls are doing a terrific job applying these skills when spelling words! Yahoo!!!

For Reading we will begin our last unit, Building Our Homes. We will discuss “How do homes help us survive and enjoy life?” Our first story will be titled Homes Around the World. It is an informational text and we will becomparing and contrasting different types of homes.

We will be reviewing Math skills and will continue testing skills and concepts learned throughout the school year. Review time to the hour, money values and coin identification, numbers 0-31, and writing numbers correctly.

Wednesday evening, May 18^th the Spring Concert will be held in the High School Auditorium @ 7PM. Band and Chorus in grades 4, 5, & 6 will perform. All are welcome to attend. On Thursday morning, May 19^th all NSE students will travel to the HS to see the band and chorus in an encore performance.

Thursday, May 19^th is Library and students will only be returning books, NOT borrowing. Be sure to locate and return books. All books must be returned to the library by Friday, May 20^th!

Friday, May 27^th will be the PTO Carnival. Lunch forms were sent home this week so we have an accurate count for lunch that day. The cafeteria needs our count by Wednesday, May 18. **If you have not yet returned the form, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you! (There will be NO alternate lunch choices on Carnival Day.)

Kindergarten News

In Phonics we will be learning the long vowel rule for a vowel consonant silent e pattern as in the words hose and kite. We refer to the silent e as a “sneaky e” which makes the vowel says its name. Please take some time to review long vowel sounds. No Show and Tell!!

For Math we will be finishing up our Saxon Math lessons and reviewing Test Taking Strategies. We will begin to review concepts and skills learned throughout the school year and will begin 4^th marking period testing. Take some time to review the coins; penny, nickel, dime, and quarter and their values.

We will begin our last Reading story in Unit 5. It is titled; This is the Way We Go to School. It is a fiction story about children around the world. We will focus on the comprehension skill, drawing conclusions and will work with the letter sounds /y/ and /kw/ for the letters Yy and Qq. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

This week the Reading teachers will test each Kindergarten child. Children will need to write a dictated sentence, recognize, write, and give the sound of every letter of the alphabet, be able to provide a word that begins with every letter of the alphabet, and write as many words correctly in 10 minutes. Please try to have your child at school and try at home to work on some of the areas to be tested to ensure that your child is fully prepared.

The last book exchange for the school library this school year will take place during the rotation schedule from Monday, May 9^th through Friday, May 13^th. Be sure to locate and return books on your child’s scheduled day for book exchange during May 16^th -20^th. All books must be returned to the library by May 20^th!

Yellow field trip permission slips are being sent home in your child’s folder. Please complete, sign, and return the permission slip form as soon as possible. Attached is a field trip lunch form to be completed and returned as well. (This is optional, but the form needs to be completed and returned either way.) **Just a reminder, students will need to wear their blue NSE shirts (that were given to them from the PTO) on the field trip—so have it ready!

--Approved chaperones have a separate note attached about ticket cost and lunch. Please be sure to respond as soon as possible.

Green order forms for our Kindergarten Graduation DVD are being sent home in your child’s folder too. Please return it to your child’s teacher no later than Wednesday, May 25^th. Details are listed on the form.

· For Reading we will start a new story titled, On The Move! It is an informational text by author Donna Latham. We will work with the letter sounds /v/ and /z/ and the comprehension skill, main idea. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

In Math we will be Comparing Heights and Lengths of objects, Sharing a Whole by separating it into 2 equal parts, Using objects to represent numbers to 20 and numbers to represent a set of objects, Measuring length using inches, and Identifying halves and fourths. We will continue to write numbers 11-30 correctly, tell time to the hour, add dots on dominoes, and draw pictures for addition and subtraction story problems. Please review daily practice pages!

The end of the year testing for kindergarten will begin soon. Each child will be tested by the Reading teachers. Kindergarten News

~This week we will be focusing on the two sounds of digraph th. It makes a voiced (vibrating) sound as in feather and an unvoiced sound as in thimble. This is difficult so going over daily worksheets to review would be helpful! Please continue to practice writing and reviewing sounds with your child at home. There will be NO Show and Tell.

~For Reading we will begin The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper. It is a classic fantasy story, and we will be talking about how trains move. We will be learning about short /u/ sound and the comprehension skill, plot. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter on Tuesday.

~We will continue in Math with drawing pictures for “Some, Some Went Away” stories, identifying and making symmetrical designs, counting pennies to pay for items that together cost less than 30 cents and writing numerals through 30 to label sets. Please review identifying the solid shapes: cone, sphere, cube, and cylinder.

~Our class has participated in the “A Child’s View” writing for the Republican-Herald newspaper. The entries and class photo are to be published in a supplement on Thursday, April 28^th. Students answered the question “What do you want to be when you grow up and why?” Be sure to check this out!!!!

~We are approaching the end of the year testing for Kindergarten and the Reading teachers will test each child. Children will need to write a dictated sentence, recognize, write, and give the sound of every letter of the alphabet, be fluent in phonemic segmentation, be able to provide a word that begins with every letter of the alphabet, and be able to use a word in a sentence. Please try at home to work on some of the areas to be tested to ensure that your child is fully prepared. DIBELS testing will be held for Kindergarten on April 27^th and 28^th. This will be the last time for this school year.

~Wednesday through Friday mornings this week the Kindergarten teachers will be taking turns visiting the Child Development Center in Ft. Springs to meet the boys and girls who will be attending Kindergarten next year at NSE and to help transition students to Kindergarten. Substitute teachers will be covering the classes for the mornings. Please remind you child to be on his/her best behavior. Thank you!

~Friday, April 22^nd is Earth day. Earth day is a day to remember to take care of our planet by keeping it clean. We will be talking about the environment to prepare for this special day. We will discuss the important rule that tells us to “reduce, reuse, and recycle” and how following this rule can make a difference! Perhaps as a family you could plan a special project in your neighborhood!

~There will be NO school for teachers and students Friday, April 22^nd and Monday, April 25^th. School will be in session Tuesday, April 26^th. Enjoy your spring break and Happy Easter!

Kindergarten News

This week in Phonics we will be learning the digraph sh as in shark and ship. For Show and Tell we will try something a little different, we will try an “Easter Egg” show and tell. Please use the plastic egg sent home with your child. The schedule will be the same for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, but due to our spring break—the Friday students will share on Monday (4/18) instead. **see the ½ sheet of paper in your child’s folder for more details.

For Reading we will begin the story Messenger, Messenger by Robert Burleigh. It is a rhyming story and we will be talking about transportation jobs. The comprehension skill we will focus on with this story is compare and contrast and the phonics skill will be the short /u/ sound. A new Family Times newsletter will be sent home on Monday.

In Math, we will be identifying the time of day as day or night, and morning, afternoon, or evening. We will be counting by 2’s and learning about even and odd numbers, as well as acting out story problems for subtraction. Please review daily practice pages!

On Wednesday, April 20^th there will be a BRAINSHOWMANIA program in the gym for all students. Be sure to ask your child about this exciting game show-like assembly!!!

Thursday, April 21^st will be our Easter party and egg hunt. We will be searching for our class eggs with the word “from” on them. **Each class will have a different high frequency sight word to try and make the hunt more challenging and fair for all.

Congratulations to our class for collecting the most money in Kindergarten for the “Coins for Critters” project! We collected over $70!!! Thank you to all who contributed. We have earned an ice cream party for our class. How COOL!!!

FYI –Names of the participants of the Read-at-Home Challenge (I’m a Reader! Contracts) from Newspaper in Education Week were printed in the Monday, April 11^th edition of the Republican & Herald newspaper.

* In Math, we will be acting out and drawing “some, some more” stories and solving a problem by guessing and checking. We will identify a cone and sort three-dimensional objects. Kindergarten News

For Reading we will begin Unit 5: Going Places. Our first story will be Max Takes the Train by Rosemary Wells. It is an animal fantasy story and we will be discussing realism and fantasy. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter and have your child practice the Words to Read!
In Math we will continue to use tangrams and explore slides, turns, and flips. We will work on identifying largest and smallest shapes and cover half of a shape, will practice paying for items using pennies, nickels, dimes, or a quarter, and will identify doubles and matching sets. Take some time to review the daily practice worksheets!!
Scholastic book orders for the month of April are due by Tuesday, April 12th for anyone interested in ordering.

· This week we will be learning the letter Qq as in quilt. The girls will finally get to be Queens for a Day on Wednesday, March 30^th! We will learn about combination “qu” too. The boys and girls will even be invited to participate in a special wedding ceremony for Q and U on Friday, April 1^st! (Details sent home in folder.) There will be NO show and tell for the letter Qq. **Word List 19 will be tested on Thursday, March 31^st! Please practice daily!

· For Reading we will introduce the next story titled Abuela by Arthur Dorros. It will be a fiction story about a city adventure. We will focus on the comprehension skill setting and will review the sound of /e/. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

· In Math, we will be solving a problem by drawing a picture and looking for a pattern, identifying the numbers 11-30, identifying a sphere and ordering objects by size, sorting coins and identifying a quarter and a dollar, and covering designs using tangrams. Take some time to review the daily practice pages that come in your child’s folder.

· The 4^th marking period will begin on Tuesday, 3/29/11. Report cards for the 3^rd marking period will be sent home on Friday, April 1^st. Kindergarten News

This week we will be working on the letter Ww and its sound as in wagon and watermelon. Review identifying and writing letters learned. Also practice blending letters in three, four, and five letter words. We will have Show & Tell so please follow the schedule. **Word List 18 will be tested on Thursday, March 24^th. Practice daily!
To go along with our letter Ww, we will have Wacky Hair Day on Friday, March 25^th. Start thinking about a wacky hairstyle for the day. Remember boys and girls with short hair can always wear WIGS—they are wacky too!!!
Wednesday, March 23^rd will be WATERY WEDNESDAY. We will be talking about water and completing different experiments involving water throughout the day. It will be WONDERFUL!
As a theme for the week we will be discussing different kinds of weather. Maybe we will even have a future meteorologist in our midst!
For Reading we will begin an informational text titled If You Could Go to Antarctica, by author Fay Robinson. We will practice the comprehension skill classify and categorize. Please practice the new high frequency words here, go and from.
In Math we will be working with sorting and identifying tangram pieces, covering designs using tangrams, and identifying small, medium, and large shapes. We will measure length & width using nonstandard units, graph a picture on a pictograph, explore slides, turns, and flips, and count forward and backward on a number line. Be sure to review daily practice pages at home!
Our Kindergarten class has begun a study of wood and paper for Science. We have been looking at the properties of wood and paper and have been writing in a Science notebook about what we have observed so far. Take some time to discuss with your child what he or she has learned!
Kindergarten graduation pictures will be taken in the morning Thursday, April 7^th. Envelopes are being sent home with portrait package information. If interested in purchasing pictures then please return the money before or on the day of pictures. **Each child will be photographed as part of a class photo even if a package is not purchased, so please plan on your child wearing a WHITE COLLARED SHIRT and girls, no hairstyles on top of your heads because you will be wearing graduation caps and gowns!
FYI: (Mark your calendars!) Kindergarten Graduation will be held on Monday, May 23^rd in the evening at the High School Auditorium. Details will be sent home at a much later date.

Monday, March 21^st is Day 3—Gym Class, so be sure to wear sneakers and gym attire. Library books will be needed on Thursday, March 24^th.

Kindergarten News

This week we will be learning the letter Xx as in fox and x-ray. Students will go on a treasure hunt throughout the building to find the “X” that marks the spot of their hidden treasure! How exciting!!! There will be NO Show and Tell. **Word List 17 test will be Thursday, March 17^th. Please practice daily!

In Reading we will begin the classic traditional tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, as retold by Valeri Gorbachev. We will review the comprehension skill, character and the letter sound /g/. Watch for your new Family Times newsletter!

For Math we will make ABBC patterns, divide by sharing, compare numbers through 10 using playing cards, identify right and left, and explore tangrams. Boys and girls should practice writing numbers 1-20 correctly and continue to practice counting by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s. Take some time each day to review practice worksheets!!!

Thursday, March 17^th is St. Patrick’s Day—Don’t forget to wear something green. It could be your lucky day!!!

Starting sometime next week and/or the following week we will begin testing for the 3^rd marking period. Please help your child prepare by reviewing all the letters and sounds learned in phonics, blending sounds to read words, practice high frequency words and sight words, practice rhyming words, practice counting to 100, identifying numbers 0-30, identifying coins; penny, nickel, and dime, and know each coin’s value, and tell time to the hour.

Students in grades 3-6 will be taking the PSSA tests March 15, 16, & 17, so please remind your child to be extra quiet when walking through the hallways each day.

Newspaper in Education Week ends on Friday, March 11^th. The “I’m a Reader” forms, for those who participated, should be returned to the teacher next week with a parent’s signature and initial for each day of the week.

Anyone interested in ordering a yearbook should send in the order and money by Monday, March 14^th. The cost is $16.00 and Checks or Money Orders need to be made payable to NSE PTO.

Monday (3/14/10) will be DAY 2 on the special classes’ schedule. **Boys and girls will need sneakers and gym attire on Tuesday, March 15^th – DAY 3, and library books for exchange on Thursday, March 17^th.

***Just a reminder—Daylight Savings Time takes place this weekend. Don’t forget to set your clocks one hour ahead! Spring forward!!!
